Hahaha, ghost town :p
It's like that here, once a year, while the Melbourne Cup (horse race) is running. It's quite freaky, huh? |

Totally. I almost stopped my car to snap those pictures. If you look carefully at the 2nd photo, the reason why there are so many cars parked like that is because everybody is watching the game in the cafés in that street.
So, Melbourne Cup? Is it like a World Cup between Melburnians and Melbournites or something? :p |

Haha, no. The Melbourne Cup is a horse race.
Yes, you read that correctly. A horse race.
Our entire country (for the most part) will stop entirely while this race runs. Nearly everyone will be watching it, or at least listening to it on the radio. That day is even a public holiday in the state of Victoria (or perhaps just the city of Melbourne? I'm not completely sure). |

Australia stops... for a horse race? A race... with horses?
Heh, and I thought Australia was the least exotic English-speaking country in the world. You just had to prove me wrong! |

'Exotic' is rather subjective :p
But hey, it's always nice to be surprising! |

@Sushipunk errr it doesn't get as near empty as that for the Melbourne Cup. i don't know what you're on about. the roads still have plenty of cars, there are still a fair few people walking around.
extreme exaggeration lol |

Where do you live in Bris, the CBD/inner suburbs or something? :conf: Of course there would still be heaps of people around there, lol.
The last 3 Melbourne Cups have turned the east side here into a complete ghost town, unless you happen to be at one of the pubs/bars/cafes in the area. I'm not too far off Wynnum Road (major truckway, if you're not acquainted with a area) and there were trucks and semi-trailers pulled up all along the sides of the street everywhere with guys standing around watching it on portable TVs. Next to no traffic at all. You must live somewhere packed/busy :p |

Yeah, I just don't know. I'm not interested, and don't see the appeal, but the Melbourne Cup is a huge deal in Oz. |

It's a tradition. Stu isn't exaggerating, it's a pretty massive yearly event country wide. |

omfg, went to a grade school reunion last night.
indescribable in words, really. we went to a small school, so had like 25 ppl to a class. i'd say about half of us attended. everyone was REALLY awesome and successful and even after all these years, it was like we were great friends.
the food and drinks were amazing. i had a leffe blonde, a harp, and 2 hoegaardens, along with french cut chicken which was just INSANELY good (braised chicken, cherry demi glace, walnut brioche stuffing, haricot vert salad).
we then left to go to APO (Apothecary) which is this cool lounge in Philly that serves very complex and herbal mixed drinks.
We got a bottle of "Booty Collins" that came in a medicine bottle and a chemical flask (see below):
