The pic that Lilith posted wasn't of frogs - They're Cane Toads. They were an introduced species to Australia in the 1930s to control the cane beetles on sugar cane farms, but they spread immensely quickly, and are considered a noxious pest now. They have no natural predators here, and since they're highly poisonous, they destroy tons of the native wildlife here, most notably, the populations of native frogs :( Not to mention cats and dogs, and just about anything else.
Fun fact: The native crows here are about the only thing that can eat them. They flip them onto their backs and eat them from the stomach, thereby avoiding the poison glands :gsmile:
Just too many toads now though, for the crows to make any kind of difference :( |
