Actually, I figured it was la niña, as el niño is supposed to make our dry weather even drier.

Currently we are shifting from a La Nina to a neutral state...however, it is anticipated to change to an El Nino by the end of 2012.

Australia is like the northern half of Africa. One big ass pile of sand. And with the trade winds flowing the wrong direction (pre-se), you don't get any precipitation except for along some portions of the coast....largely in partial to there being no significant mountains to cause the atmosphere to lift and rain on you (re: Rocky Mountains, Alps, Andes, etc...).
