| Hey, I have no doubt he's wanting to make some cash doing this, but on the (off?) chance he might do something useful for the environment... is that a bad thing? |

Thanks, though it's not much of a background :p
Dams like this have a huge environmental impact on the area, and on the surrounding areas (where the dammed river would have normally flowed). How do you feel about that, Kevin? :p |
haha... I don't know man. I'm sure there are positives and negatives on both sides. I look at those people surrounding Cameron and can't help but imagine they're thinking, "Get your ing cameras and entourage out of here and leave us in peace, pale face." |

I can understand that, and you're probably right. Like I said, I have no illusions that he's not trying to make a buck from this :p
Maybe I'm making it too personal or something. I grew up in a pretty rural area, on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. We had a nice little river flowing through, just north of town. When I was about 8 or so, the council/government decided to dam it, for a water supply. Not only were a bunch of people told that their 'riverfront' houses were being compulsorily acquired (obviously, they were compensated, but they had no choice in the matter), but large portions of the 'dam' area was a habitat for a number of [semi] rare species of birds and animals. Made no difference. It went ahead (despite being unusable for a water supply for years, due to a massive algae problem). Many, many, many areas below the dam were then ed, both farming areas, and natural forest areas.
All I'm saying is, awareness about that kind of stuff isn't a bad thing, even if he's making $$$ of it. It's the high profile people that are (sadly) able to create funding for causes like this. |

Yeah, and i hate to be a cynic but the reality is probably this: people will get a glimpse of Cameron's "real life" Navi with the same emotional pleas we saw in Avatar's themes. They'll feel bad and lament the injustices of thoughtless destruction facing "those unfortunate people." Then, 10 minutes later, they'll be tweeting about Kim Kardashian's handbag or flipping on American Idol, forgetting about the natives with loin clothes. And in the end, the only thing that will change is Cameron's wallet will be fatter and his carbon footprint from all the Amazon trips will be huge.
I've been hearing since I was 6 years old that the Amazon was verging on turning into a parking lot. That monster will be thriving long after Cameron's great grandchildren spend their inheritence! :p |

Yeah, I know :( Like I said, I'm under no illusions about $$$ here, and you're right about society's ADHD syndrome.
Mass logging of huge tracts of rainforest, or damming of natural rivers, saddens me though.
ing hippies like me.
