This is my first post here, and I just wanted to say this was a very interesting and entertaining thread to read. I have to give all of you props for such strong debating, because I can clearly see both sides of this debate.
Technically, any music made electronically that you can dance to is Electronic Dance Music. But, when I think of tracks by Britney Spears or 50cent, I think... pop, rap, whatever.. I don't normally associate the styles under MY umbrella of 'EDM'. At least I don't. But if you want to get technical and realistic, it's EDM since they background sounds are made electronically, and people dance to it.
Now, I'm going to Chicago this weekend to enjoy the sounds of Sven Vath. What genre would he be classified under? I guess it depends on what kind of set he decides to spin. Normally, I'd say techno. I won't get into any other subgenres. I'm in chill mode today. :)

Yes. I know. The phrase, "electronic dance music" is quite misleading. One of the things that was avoided by founders of many EDM genres [referring to trance mostly] is the influence of other cultures. For example, in the United States, most [if not all] of the music has African American influences whether it be in the beat or notes used. Remember Rock and Roll? Well that's from African American influences. And those heart pounding rap beats you hear today? Well that's clearly from African American influence.
What's different about trance is that they tried their best to avoid African American influence, effectively making their music unique to their culture. Why do you think barely anyone in the US knows exactly what trance is? That consistent beat that is characteristic of many trance songs is derived from the avoidance of other cultures' music. Notice how music with an African American influence has very few [if not any] consistent beats. Therefore, the genre many of you here are referring to should be called "EUROPEAN Dance Music" rather than electronic since pretty much everything today is electronic. |

Trance comes from techno. Techno was invented by black people. You are wrong. |

This is all very wrong. House music was invented in Chicago by likes of Dj Pierre, Marshall Jefferson & Frankie Knuckless. They are all black.
Techno was invented in Detroit by Juan Atkins, Derrick May & Kevin Saunderson. They also are all black.
Trance didn't exist until few years after House and Techno broke into Europe. |
