Edm Genres? (pg. 5)

I find that it is much more helpful for finding good music if you come up with your own schemes to classify certain sounds, but at the same time, it is good to know what other people call them so that you can name a style and people will know what you are talking about.
Everyone classifies stuff differently, which is part of the reason why people are always arguing over what categories things belong in, in the end, it doesn't really matter what the sound is classified as.
I try to classify things by the speed and common traits in the sounds, then attach adjectives to those genres to describe the feeling of a particular set of tunes.
The way I do it, you have down tempo, house, breaks, jungle, hardcore.
house, hardcore, and (some!) down tempo tunes typicaly have a 4/4 beat to them, hardcore being the fastest paced style and downtempo being the slowest. Breaks, jungle, and (again some!) down tempo have differeing drum beats to them, usualy its still a 4/4 time sigiture, but the drums dont necessarily hit on the same beats, jungle being a faster pace than the other two.
Notice I don't consider trance as a major category, mainly because In my opinion any style of music has equal potential to be entrancing, so I use the word trance more as an adjective to describe the effect of certain tunes on ppl's heads. There are some things that dont even fit in those classifications though, and each one has many many sub categories, almost too many for any single person to understand them all.
Anyway, good luck trying to find out the illogical classification schemes that most of us are using, it just takes time, and it is always changing because people are always putting out new stuff that questions the definitions of the music styles.
I would advise that after hearing one tune, not to assume that everything else in that same category sounds the same, if you do that you might very well miss out on something really good, so dont judge a particular genre prematurely.
Actually, I think this stuff is better enjoyed all intermixed with each other instead of people separating into their own little sub styles, it just makes for more fun I think when everybody has at least some appreciation for everyone else's sounds. |

| No, saying Hip Hop and Rap are EDM because they fit under breakbeat and are made with synthesizers/drum machines and computers is not an illogical classification scheme. |

wholly crap. 2 pages of banter over subgenres again!!.
despite my complete loathing for it, hip hop / c(RAP) is EDM, since it is mostly electronic, and it is dance music.. and yes percussion can be electronic ESPECIALLY when it is done with a Roland 808 Drum machine!!...
lets not forget how many different things from our beloved EDM scene have come from the hip hop movement. alot of the dance formats you see at partys or in teh club come from breakdancing which "guess what" came from the hip hop culture.
i hate rap with a passion but i still aknowledge its existence, and value it for its ablility to keep the white wannabe thugs out of my favorite afterhours hot spots. |

| About one of the only hip hop acts out there doesn't use an electronic device of some sort (beatbox, sampler, turntable) for their rhythms is The Roots. |

I was wondering when someone was going to bring this point up.
And as for the genres, theres endless numbers and sub-genres. And flame me if I'm wrong these are just some examples i'm using. Trance- Goa, Psy, Melodic, etc.. House - UK Hard, Filtered, Electro, Funky.. No point in classifying them all really since you can mix *almost* all together if you're good enough and have the right tracks. |

| Why over analyse everything? All that matters is that there are two types of music; Good music and music. |

| I suppose if you wanted to be more picky you could have an 'average' category too without stepping on my 'over analysing' point. |

But many of those styles are fused. Like Ambient Trance, then there's Progressive Trance and Euphoric Trance. :p Euphoric and ambient are probably interchangeable, and it's my fav style of Trance.
P.S. Umm...Don't include hip-hop, it's not EDM, it's related to rap. |
