all i can think of, and i'd have to go with trance as the best :p |
Progressive only exists becasue DJs like Digweed and Sasha wanted to be taken seriosuly..... so they made it up...
it's a term used by ppl who want to think their better or more intelligent than other listeners of EDM...
(according to Ishkur) |

Well they are better, and more intelligent, and they definately do not play trance. So call it what you want. |

| Progressive EDM predates Sasha and Diggers. Leftfield are credited with inventing prog house in 1991. |

You people are sooo stuck in your dull minds and need to give tracks labels. This is why I think Ishkurs guide is stupid and pointless. Maby it would make more sence if he named tracks that are the same style instead of giving them subjective names. Yes I know he has 3 or 4 for each style, but they definately can not signify the majority of a genere.
I mean Castles in the Sky epic trance? I know plenty of friends that will not listen to EDM at all cause that is the only tipe of crap that they hear on the radio. Giving more people the view that, that track is what trance is definately hurts EDM as a whole.
Why does a label mean anything? I know that most of you need to show & prove that this or that is trance before you can listen to it because it may pierce your ear, and make you go insane and kill massive amounts of people. |

| Castles In The Sky is epic trance. It may be a bit crappier than underground ( ) epic trance, but it's still the same style. |

Dear God. House is American. Techno is American. American producers were the ones who discovered the handiness of the TB 303 and other famous pieces of kit, which wrote the rule-book for a generation of producers. Europe's contributions to EDM would likely never have happened if it weren't for American contributions.
Europe is not the centre of the universe for dance music. |
Ok. So Europe isn't the center of the universe for dance music. Then why is trance virtually non-existent here? I've rarely even brought a trance CD or vinyl to a dance. Everything is hip-hop here aside from some rock songs. In the United States, the masses love hip-hop, rap, and R&B. Now I haven't been to Europe in three years but it seems to me that there are many more trance listeners in Europe than the US.
You also mentioned that European contributions would not have existed had American contributions to techno not existed. However, my point was that there needs to be a line drawn between the two. Notice that trance from different countries seem to have their own twist. The idea is that it may have come from America, but what I've seen is pretty much an abandonment of techno-like genres by most people here. What you label EDM makes the genre far too general. The question is: Do we label a genre by its distant relatives or by the people who carry it on in their production and enjoy it in the modern day?
Also. Don't you think the term "Electronic Dance Music" is pretty redundant under the some of the definitions posted in here? I mean, if hip-hop is EDM, wouldn't all dance music be called EDM since all of them are electronic in some manner?
I have read Ishkur's guide to EDM genres. However, I do not necessarily agree with all of it. I'd like to see some more citing of credible sources. Of course, I don't blame him for his opinions. He doesn't have a PhD in taxonomy so give him a break for all the stuff you might not agree with. At least he made an effort. :) |

| I'm currently on 28 hours without sleep and I can't see properly. I'll field this tomorrow when I'm in a state to do so. Ish and the Auronaut guy can reply, as they'll say what I am failing to articulate. |

not all electronic music is dance...
EDM is a "sub genre" of electronic music...
not a "sub genre" of dance music... |
