So they used live instruments..
But now 98% of hip hop tracks are totally made by computers.
Sure u can say the samples were made by say "live instuments"(violins, guitars, drums)
but that doesnt make them NON- EDM.
ALL hip hop tracks are filled with synths nowadays.. Just because they dont have supersaw MELODIES doesnt make them NON-EDM..where the are they gonna produce that pounding bass anyway if they dont use a frigging program?? |

Well if you're talking about WJLB Detroit, he joined in the late 80's, 1987 to be exact.
And if you want to hear his fine trainwrecks just listen to these mixes. 70 records, scratching with elbow, moving the fader with his penis...nice trix, but trix are for kids. He doesn't have the skills to mix so fast so well. Now Bad Boy Bill did, if he still doesn't. You don't come away from a youth of DJ battles in the early-mid 80's Chicago with no skills. If you can manage to track down any sets from him that aren't edited. I suggest...this one if you can find it(recorded in 2002 if you can believe it). Or maybe one of these from '88. I suggest #1149. Any will do I guess. For some reason there don't really seem to be many available anywhere. You'll might just have to catch him live. In fact i'd go so far as to say that Bad Boy Bill is a perfect mixer whereas Jeff Mills(and most techno DJ's) are sloppy at that even though they are both have been playing and play about the same amount of records. Listen to Exhibitionist for example. I guess that's not edited, and you can hear the bad transitions. I'd say BBB stands higher than Jeff Mills. |

WHAT IS THE STANDARD THAT MUSIC MUST POSSESS IN ORDER TO QUALIFY AS "EDM"?:
1. Relies on electronic sounds and synthesizers
OR:
2. Uses any electronic sounds or synthesizers
Pick either 1 or 2 if you wish to debate this any further and then we can proceed. |

Muckluck, you don't have to convince me of badboybill's prowess. I'm not bagging on any of them here, and I already said he's top 10 material for sure. But I've seen Mills do some pretty awesome things that absolutely kicked my ass, and at any given time often interchange his name with Hawtin's as the pinnacle of techno's precision.
Haven't listened to those mixes....but will get around to them. |

I'll agree with Sandstorm on this one.
Obviously there are different kinds of intelligence. You can be great at Math and terrible in art.
I think the place where a DJs is able to demonstrate his intelligencethe most clearly is with an artist cd. Sasha clearly demonstrates a lot of it with Involver as it crosses over from being a mix into a kind of aural sculpture... |
