This has been said over and over again, but I'll say it again.
Why do you guys wish to argue over what fits into what genre? The benefits of catagorizing music is minimal, and I personally dont feel that the over analyzation of EDM sub genres has been beneficial in any way at all.
One time, I was talking to a guy, who listens to electronic music, but you know, isnt really into it, and we're talking, and he says "why would you bother to split up a genre of music that all sounds similar in the first place?" Obviously this was a stupid statement, and there are reasons to make all the little sub genres, but it did make me think. |

Why categorize other things? Take, for instance, condiments. They share the same purpose, many of them look the same. Should we just forget that each individual condiment deserves it's own name and call it 'Condiment'
Furthermore, should yellow mustard, brown mustard, honey mustard, spicy mustard, etc ... just all be called 'mustard' and not given their own classification of mustard? |

I don't want some kid to get that cheesy Uphigh Progressively Nu-Uplifting 2-Step Vox Trance music mixed up with the faaar superior Subdown Regressively Old-Skool Melodic Vocal Trance. It sucks when they get confused between the two. |

I have to admit, this thing has gotten entertaining, even to me, a contributor. Probably one of the most sterile debates in a long time. :p

Would you not say that Electronic music is much more split up than other genres of music?
And dont give me this "no, you just have no knowledge of other forms of music"
Secondly, what dissapoints me is how despite how an electronic musician can easily jump genres album to album, each album almost always has tracks all applying to the same sound. Now of course I realize that firstly there are many albums where an artist dies infact jump sub genre to sub genre between productions, but there arent many, and I also realize that artists feel pressured to make an album all one sound because they know what people are expecting in this album, and electronic albums are often analyzed on its complete sound (the whole album) as rock music isnt so harshly judged on the build of the album as a whole.

I think there are several reasons hip hop gets excluded from edm
1)most of us are crackers
2)hip hop has enough of a fan base without the EDM crowd
3)lotsa kids come to EDM cuz they dislike rap
4)hip hop is not marketed to the same people as those who like the dominant edm styles like house, breaks, etc
but still, hip hop and edm's history has crossed paths many many times, and EDM as we know it today would not be the same thing without the contributions that have came from those styles, that is the main reason why I think it fits under the EDM umbrella.
I also see lotsa EDM DJ's getting gigs at hiphop events, and vice versa, granted its not the 50cent variety of hip hop usualy.
it doesnt really matter though, it all depends on yer definition of EDM
I found some hip hop on that site you gave Hydarnes, have a look at that ragga section and you will hear things that sound very hiphop. Acid Jazz, that has lotsa hip hop influences too(and the other way around as well). Hmmm, I was cathing a lot of hip hopness from the breakbeats section of there as well.
I'm thinking you have a problem with the association of comercial rap with EDM, which is understandable, but just because you dont see a rap section on some EDM web sites doesnt mean its not there, they just call it different things according to the specific sounds inside. |

for a rough guide, i dont suggest using ishkurs guide at all. its a fine guide for people who know their as they can differentiate between the spouting and wots actually true in there.
instead i direct any1 who wants to understand the basic difference between the main genres without going too deep into all the many sub genres :

click on the genre u want then listen to the short clips for some of the tunes and u should be able to pick up the similarities in each genre pretty quickly |
thanks man..thats really helpful to me..im gonna start listening to it in a second
oh and maybe someone should make a sticky on the EDM Genres and add the sites to learn your stuff and what not ..or something like that..anyone think..it make things alot better?
or do you just think this is an opinion thing and it will never go anywhere? |
