Tempo is a big factor, Trance is usually much more uptempo than house.
Progressive is about in the middle 133-138 BPM. I guess the thing that defines house and trance is the continuous . . . . . . . . beat with a hi hat spaced in between each bass thunk x x x x x x x x and a kick every other beat... |

ok but i mean i dont know all that stuff..im learning but i still dont know it all? should i just keep reading like the guides and or will i know eventually
oh by the way i know house and trance sound different obviously..its getting down to euphoric and ambient trance i dont get or like anthem trance ....thats so technical and ..why not just call it all trance..i mean you sound more sophisticated and when u say the actually thing but when it comes down to it...does it really matter? |

i know im new to all of this but you guys plz have to just explain this to me its seriously messin with me...i know theres many different genres...but how do you differenciate them from others...for example trance to house or house to ambient or whatever you guys said |
well.. it's just something you understand more and more with time.. there are blatant characteristics that distinguish tracks from trance to house to ambient to techno... but there's also always loads of middle-of-the-road tracks that feature influences from several genres.. that can be always confusing, as an example i still haven't got much of a clue of what exact subgenre are the pryda tracks from (i guess they're somewhere between funky house and techno yet they're in my prog trance folder :D ) |

right...you know what it is alright

It gets even more complicated when one considers parochial differences. Euros wouldn't say "UK Hard House", and would probably add 'Dance'(aka girly cheese-pop) and "Hardstyle". Also, a lot of d&b is made with analogue instruments.
It's all in the mix. Weekend Players - I'll Be There ( Gabriel And Dresden Mix ) is trance. The Soul Mekanik Remix is prog, or at least that's what I call it. Same with Weekend Players - Into The Sun (Riva Mix) vs. the Tiefschwarz Club Vocal mix. Most of Fragma's stuff is cheesy pop - they remind me of the Spice Girls - lol. However, there are some excellent trance mixes - the Liquid Love Dub mix of "Say That You're Here" is one of my favourite trance tracks of all time. There are countless examples of cross-genre mixes. Just about any catchy, popular dance track will be remixed to suit the style of various dj/producers, and will often cover trance, house, prog, break, etc., with one cheesy pop song. |

Even if you think I'm all wet on electronic music, what makes you think that excuses you from acknowledging the fact? Why don't you step up to the plate and deliver something besides your own aggrandized opinion? |

acknowledge what fact? i truthfully dont what else to say. there are numerous people here against what your saying and some that go with it. but in my...opinion, its just common sense that music electronically made, is ing electronic music. i still havnt heard YOU explain why it isnt. just because you perhaps dont like hiphop doesnt entitle you do deminish it for what it is. is it perhaps the rapping part that makes it something other than electronic? what the is vocal trance then. what about artists like anti pop consortium, bonobo, nightmares on wax, john kennedy, dj shadow, rjd2, funkstörung even could be put here; and all the other countless hiphop artists out there. labels like mo wax, ninja tune, warp, and many others...you wouldnt call that electronic music? What is it then?! |

| I suppose techically rock music is EDM since it's electrontic and people dance to it. I find really funny that rock fans critize "techno" for being too repeative and not made on "real instruments" while rock artists are using more and more Trance/House/breaks/Dnb etc production techinques to make their music less repeative. In the end it all gets mastered on a VSTI program anyway (usually ACID). |
