This is a great thread! I just discovered it and skimmed through during lunch. I am trying to get back into shape as well since I haven't had a regular workout routine in the last few years either, and admittedly my eating habits have gotten more lax.

Kelly - I saw your post about bikram yoga. I have a friend that swears by it. Not only is it good excerise, it's good detox too. This place has a few locations in the city including midtown and the UWS. http://www.bikramyoganyc.com/ I'm not in good enough shape to go yet, but I started doing yoga at home, and after the first session I felt muscles I didn't remember I had!

Mere - One of my friends is an avid swimmer, and I believe she goes to the YMCA by Union Square. I don't think it's that expensive, and it's a pretty convenient location.

Re: drinking calories I switched to diet soda in mixed drinks last year and noticed I was getting drunk faster. I did a little research and discovered that since your digestive system doesn't have as much sugar/carbs to process the alcohol hits your bloodstream faster. Just something to keep in mind while you're pacing yourself =)

Bikram isn't great for you, especially if you are starting out. I wouldn't recommend it just yet until you've reached the stage where you are consuming plenty of water and have had prior yoga sessions. Bikram is pretty intense as you sweat like no other (i took 1 class and never went back) - but that doesn't mean I'm some yoga expert lol. Anyways I've done a few core poses to help with ab endurance over actual exercises and I know yoga does wonders but you should really start with a few regular yoga sessions before you go into the sweat box.

Right right, I completely agree with you. That's why I'm doing yoga at home first, so I can master some of the poses and breathing before going in the sweatbox. I don't expect to be ready for a couple months or so.

Also Mere, the pool my friend goes to is actually at Baruch. It's her favorite one: http://athletics.baruch.cuny.edu/Sp...d%20Rentals.asp

My old trainer gave me the advice: if you really CANT cut out alcohol, drink tonic drinks (vodka/gin and tonic). They are 60 calories each compared to 150(ish) for a beer or 500-800 for a pina colada. (helps that I have little tolerance anymore and tend to drink about 4-5 drinks now)

Tru dat!

Hence why bacardi & diet has been such a popular drink, along with low-carb beer, more people drinking on the rocks, and of course.. sugar-free red bull.

While the boys seem to love my new fat ass, I DONT and want to fit in my pants again. I've decided cutting everything back, junk food, alcohol, party favors, and cigarettes, might add to me not feeling like a sad poo at the end of each day. I REALLY want my old clothes to fit, cause I have nothing to wear lol. I joined a new 80's themed gym, but they were supossed to open 9/1... they are running late :(

I suggest you take some classes first, yoga is nothing without a mirror, form is important as well as your breathing.

Take like 2 months worth of classes then if you truly want to go sweat it out, then hit up bikram. Yoga at home just isn't the same as it is in a class with people around you.

Good advice. I'm just trying to build up my confidence first lol I don't want to be a complete embarrassment in class even though 'all beginners are welcome.' I don't think I could comfortably go to any studio in NYC without having some idea of what I'm getting into.

Actually, if you know of any low key beginner's yoga classes. Let me know!

[EDIT] I just found this studio via Yelp, and it sounds like what I'm looking for. Low key, $10/class suggested donation. Will post a review when I have a chance to go: http://www.yogatothepeople.com/

I still have to get my ass to the gym there. i've been telling myself i want to swim, but i'm dead tired from working. How are the pools at cole / palladium?

I really want to go to the palladium gym, but im not sure i have access since i'm only a PT student at the law school.
