this is excessive for people who are just trying to maintain a good weight. In fact, weight training is not necessary if your goal is to lose weight or maintain a slender body; It's not even the most effective way to do it. Weight training for the most part is directed at specific body parts and is therefore not the best way to reduce your overall body fat. There are many more activities that use your entire body and are better for the above stated goals.
Stick to cardio type activities. They don't have to be boring like jogging on a treadmill. Try raquetball, basketball, or cardio kick boxing. The most important thing is to have fun doing it. |

| weights is almost pointless if your trying to lose weight. the muscle will just build over the fat & make you buldgy. power walking is a good way to start out & cardio kickboxing is an awesome way to lose weight & get toned. for dieting its really just all about proportioning your food & try not to really eat anything big or heavy after 8. |

What is more important...how much you weigh? or your appearance in the mirror?
Lifting weights is important as much as its effective becouse it builds muscle. When you build muscle, you raise your metabolism. A higher metabolism means you burn more calories in a shorter period. Over all you will be able to burn fat off and keep it off with a form a resistance training. Lot of women dont want to lift weights becouse they are afraid that they are going to get big. You will not get big unless if you lift with both high volume and high intensity experiencing maximum hypertrophy and consume a large amount of calories. The workout routine I reposted above is far from high volume and intense. Sure a lot of weight can be lost during a cardiovascular routine. But it will easily be gained back. Why? becouse you didnt build up your metabolism from strengthening program. Ive seen it happen countless of times.
What research have you 2 done? How many people have you got into shape? What scientific proof do you have to support your theory? But im not here to argue.
So lets start over. Youre not here to lose weight. Youre here to gain muscle and drop body fat |

being the fact that i used to be an athlete & had a coach & trainer i would think its enuff proof for me haha. im actually on a diet & been just proportioning my meals & not eating after 8 & dropped 15 lbs. power walking rather than jogging is a known fact that you can burn just as much calories WiTHOUT putting as much strain on your knees. kellys gunna do whichever she fits best for her shes asking for opinions & ideas not a debate haha |

Actually Kelly is an athlete, she is just looking for new ideas since she has been busy with WORK SCHOOL AND AN INTERNSHIP and really hasn't had much time to sleep let alone work-out |

lol @ everyone's responses.
ok direct and everyone, if the advice is geared towards me (and anyone who wants to listen): I have been an athelete my whole life, and played softball in college until I was a junior until I decided that I would rather party (lol...jeez!)
Its been 4-5 years since I had a REGULAR exercise routine because I gave up working out in college (I stayed thin for a while before it PILED on!! :( ) and once I entered grad school (as phuzzyfish said) I have been working/interning/taking graduate classes for **easily** 70-80 hours a week of my time. I have only been working out 1 day a week for the last 2.5 years as a result and even THAT was difficult because I all over the place trying to live with my schedule (up early, getting home late, not sleeping EVER, eating late, etc).
I actually do know what most of those exercises are from not only being an athelete, but I also lucked out in having a couple trainers for friends while in college who put me in great routines when I quite the team. (but what the hell is a wood chop?!? ;)) Direct is absolutely right about lifting weights and with my metabolism being non-existent, anything will help. At this point I will take any advice simply because I really want to get back into the shape I once was, and even more, need to find the motivation to do so (does any find it weird that I love working out but I HATE the 5 block walk to the gym??) :haha: :haha: ;) |

clearly lifting weights isn't motivating you otherwise you never would have stopped. Find a sport you like and play that. Like i said before, raquetball is really fun and an excellent workout. |

edit: I also would love advice on this specific part of lifting: I strong and can lift more than most women who work out regularly. I also build muscle QUICKLY.
The last time I had a trainer, he noticed that the routine he gave me was not challenging enough and gave me another routine. I bulked up no matter what I did...even when he lowered my weight/reps. (FRUSTRATING!!) Any advice on how to balance a challenging workout without getting ginormous muscles would be great. :) |

I would LOVE to play raquetball, that was something I was looking into. However, I work in the north east bronx at weird hours. the only courts I have found were in manhattan (which is really too far because I already have an hour commute and dont want to travel even MORE south to get to a court at 9pm!!) :( :( boo :( |
