A few problems I have:
1. I seriously bulk up FAST when I lift. Under this layer of chub, I am very strong, and my muscles develop so fast that my I get huge arms/etc (while losing the chubbiness thru cardio takes longer for me).
2. I despise running, but it seems to be the only cardio that helps lose the weight quickly. Its seems I can do 45 minutes straight of eliptical/etc, but like 2 minutes of running LOL!! weird.
3. I get home around 10pm every night and although my diet is really healthy (and strict to a T), that always gets me. I always have a healthy snack/small meal when I get home.
4. I LOVE LOVE LOVE working out. I hate hate hate getting myself there. |

Frank: How do you suggest someone gets motivated to work out? I want to sooooo bad but I just can't get to the gym. I work until usually 7:00 every night and don't get home until around 8:30 when I just want to crash. My gym is in my building which is great but I find that after I have chilled out from work I just can;t get the enegy to go to the gym.
Any Ideas? Anyone? |
the most important thing is to find a workout you like. if you don't like working out you'll never be consistent, and without consistency you'll never reach the results you want.
If hitting up the gym isn't necessarily your thing, there are many other things you can do. Swimming is an amazing workout. Try finding a gym with a pool. Racquetball is another great workout. Maybe one of those aerobic kickboxing courses would work well for you.
If you want to go to the gym, and you haven't been at a gym in a while, i would suggest starting off doing mostly cardio and do weight training sparingly (at least in the beginning). It is important to include weight training, but it's mostly useless if your cardio vascular system isn't working efficiently.
BTW...3 days a week is fine at the gym. you may want to think about doing compound exercises. those are exercises that work out more than one muscle group. people who don't have time to workout frequently should try to workout multiple muscle groups in each exercise. If you're really interested in that i can look up information. i don't have it off hand because i rarely do compound exercises. |

I used to workout like a psycho (2hrs at the gym 5 to 6 days a week and skated twice a week or tennis twice a week)and ate kinda crappy so I was chubbier than I am now. I've also eatten really well and not exercised and that didn't work out. You need a healty balance between the two, neither is more important than the other...don't need to cut back on your favorite foods and you don't need to workout like a psycho either. |
thats 100% true because my diet is awesome, my portions are good, and I ate healthy I would say 95% of the time (i reward myself only when I go out with friends for dinner or whatever).
Eating healthy is good for me, but I still gain weight regardless. I also have a thyroid problem which (my doctor tells me) makes my metabolism almost non-existent. Working out a LOT is the only thing that kept me in shape all those years, and since grad school started, I have totally neglected my regular workout routine. |

SWIM, and reduce your weight training and increase cardio.

it's not always about what you eat, drink water. that's probably the single most important thing you can do to remove unhealthy calories from your diet. 4 cans of soda in one day is 600 calories with almost ZERO health benefit. |

^^true that. I havent drank soda for years. is horrible for you and I never liked the taste anyways.
I drink a cup of coffee in the am (a must that I will NOT give up!!) about a liter of water at work (I have a jag with refreezable iceubes!!!) more water at home, and a cup of green tea before bed. I have this everyday on the weekdays without fail. |

I LOVE TO SWIM!!! I have been trying to find a place that I can go to that isn't to much $$$$. When I was in college I used to swim for an hour 3 to 4 times a week. I know another problem I have is what I eat. I have gotten better but I just don't want to give up the things I love. |

wow thats really good, i need to train myself to drink more water...that does help to flush out excess bloat, resulting in loss of a few lbs at least. luckily we kicked the soda habit recently so there should be MUCH improvement ahead |

when I didnt belong to a gym years ago, i used to work out with hand and ankle weights at home after work even while watching TV during prime time (Seinfeld as i recall was a GREAT show to watch while working out haha)
would do madd repetitions per arm/leg per exercise for a total of 30-40 minutes, 4 times a day. it helped to tone me up in a very short time. |
I could be wrong but for the purpose of being healthy I was under the impression that doing madd reps in a short amount of time isn't a good idea. It puts to much strain on your joints and muscles and in the long run can cause you to hurt yourself. |

high reps + low weight = good. the low weight puts little strain on your joints. |

sorry bro, but this is not the most important thing. the most important thing is to eat properly. The easiest way to cut back on unhealthy calories to replace everything you drink with water. Also, don't cut out food you love, just eat those things every once in a while. |
I said most important question as a pre-requisite to my advice. I agree with you on food being #1. I'll type something up shortly. |

to be specific, I pretty much did this with REALLY low weights (3, then 5, then 7 lbs) to start and paced myself accordingly, alternating each arm/leg/side per set of 15 and did a series of different exercises per area. Making sure to breathe correctly. Making sure to stretch before and after. but finding the right routine to follow is different for everyone so i guess make sure to do whats best for your individual body.
this time i choose to add more of a balance of cardio and weight training. |
