Umm, because all the musical styles are unique and, thus, deserving of their own classification?

Would you call ketchup and mustard the same thing, since they're both condiments?

-Ambient
-Breaks
-Drum & Bass
-Goa
-Hardcore
-Hip Hop
-House
-NRG
-Progressive
-Techno
-Trance
-UK Hard House

all i can think of, and i'd have to go with trance as the best :p

But many of those styles are fused. Like Ambient Trance, then there's Progressive Trance and Euphoric Trance. :p Euphoric and ambient are probably interchangeable, and it's my fav style of Trance.

P.S. Umm...Don't include hip-hop, it's not EDM, it's related to rap.

Before someone flames you in a much harsher manner, I really recommend you study up on your genre classifications before you say that ambient and euphoric trance are the same thing.

Then please enlighten me. Many times it's hard to tell the difference between the two.

For example. Tiesto's "Just Be" both qualifies as "euphoric" AND "ambient". So do many of Kirsty's songs.

I think it's because some folks get ticked off when a sub-genre of an umbrella genre gets lumped into the same category as another sub-genre that, while sounding different in some regards, still contains elements that make both fit that under that umbrella.

Case in point: trance.

Yes, all trance has similarities, but pure psy trance fans and pure anthem trance fans (I won't include those who just like trance in general; they have their heads on straighter, me-thinks) seem to hate it when their pet sub-genre of choice gets confused with another, different sounding sub-genre.

"What do you listen to?"
"Trance."
"Oh, like Oakenfold?"
"Good God, no! Like Koxbox."

To make sure that the two styles of trance don't get mixed up, a whole slew of adjectives have been added to accurrately describe each distinct style.

"What do you listen to?"
"Trance."
"Oh, like Oakenfold?"
"No, he plays melodic trance. I like psy trance."

In the end, though, such micro-managing of slightly differing styles of music has caused such a splintering of razor-thin tastes and sub-cultures associated with each sub-genre that things get ridiculously redundant as folks will dedicated themselves to one sound and only one sound, defining themselves by it. Why anyone would want to do this when there is so much more out there to enjoy is beyond me.

Just say you enjoy EDM (or 'techno' or 'electronica'). No sense in getting highly involved into it beyond the seven majors (house, techno, trance, jungle, hardcore, breaks, and downtempo).

Both hip hop and rap are EDM.

And there are a lot of subgenres of every major genre (Country, Rock, etc...). Just because you don't know of them doesn't mean they don't have as much as EDM.

But if EDM has more then it's because it's easier to make. It requires little to no musical education to produce and is only limited by the producers imagination because of the variety of sounds a synthesizer can make as opposed to the relative limitations of, say, a guitar or a set of drums.

I have a feeling you're confused about what classifies a production as 'ambient' as far as EDM is concerned.

I'm really sorry, but that's hooey.

Hip hop falls under breaks, as hip hop that guys like Afrika Bambaataa were pioneering also used breakbeats for the musical backdrop. The fact the two splintered way apart over the years doesn't mean they aren't the same category. You still hear hip hop accapellas and breakbeat music getting mashed up these days.
