I've had enough "fun" experiences with NI software that I'd never touch their hardware.
Maybe one of these days they'll get back to releasing finished products, instead of leaving each one in beta and moving on to something else (ignoring customers who are having problems along the way). |

Maschine is actually a lot more than that - you can record your own loops real time and use them in your beat. You can do all kinds of crazy things - like real time reverse of the sample or loop, dropping FX in or running other sounds through maschine FX. You can also use it as a Live controller - it's really insane and really easy to get started.
I'm dumping my command station (hardware-based drum/synth/sequencer) and going all Maschine.
Just start here to see what it can do:

Max runtime is free. I'm not sure how much cheaper they could distribute it ;)
Look for used capybaras on ebay . Lots of people have been selling them off to upgrade to the new Paca/Paca Rana. Keep in mind that by cheap, I mean cheap for Kyma... which still isn't exactly "cheap" ;) |
Interesting to hear about the used capys... they apparently have a really good soundcard in them too.
BTW MAX4Live runtime doesn't exist. Max runtime is free. |

They definitely do.

Ahh sorry, I wasn't paying enough attention ;)
That does make sense, though. Realistically, not many typical live users are ever going to figure out how to work with max beyond loading someone elses work and using it as a plugin... so I don't think it would make financial sense for Cycling 74 to hand out runtime for free. It would be smart for them to offer it at a lower price, though. |
