I graduated with a B.S. in economics (though I don't know how important that is in the big scheme of things.) I have Series 7 and 63 licenses. I do not have an MBA or a CFA designation as the manager I work for doesn't believe they add much value (in spite of him having both). That is not to say a CFA or an MBA are worthless, just depends on a number of factors I suppose. You can't get the 7 until you're in the industry--you can't just go out and take that test, you have to be sponsored by someone who holds your license. It is generally something you do AFTER you've already been hired.
I am in a catch-22. Most of them want me to have a Series 7 and other licenses before I get hired, but for me to get them, I have to be hired first. I am going to have to sponsor myself somehow.

I'm honestly not sure how you do that. Are they really just saying that they want their applicant pool to be people who are already in the financial services industry and already have licenses? I think that only a broker/dealer can hold your license and sponsor you. I don't think you can just walk around with your own Series 7 license, but I could very easily be mistaken.

I don't think I have a choice. I think there is a way so I'll be having to do that. The only responses I'm getting are...
1) We have no open positions but will keep your resume/cover letter on file.
2) You're not qualified.
3) Do not email us again.
I know this won't be handed to me but, ffs, I think I have more financial talent than most MBAs coming out of Harvard, seriously...the first hedge fund that picks me up won't regret it. It's everyone else's loss. I can build a quant fund from my algorithms. Not even mentioning my ability to manually trade using algorithms.

Maybe you do, maybe you don't, but the ego is certainly a bit of a turn-off. A little humility in this business goes a long way.

lol, I wouldn't tell them that. :P I just have to stay positive, that's all. I'm very discouraged.
Comrade Stalin
I just got a meeting scheduled for next Monday with a small hedge fund CEO. I'm stoked!

Maintain proper interview etiquette like this guy and you'll be fine.

lol, yea. I spent all day buying clothes, shoes, printer paper, and ink. I came to LA with nothing but 2 days worth of stuff and I have been here for more than a week. This meeting will be more of a pitch of my algorithms, than a job interview. I might be getting my first $100,000 check. Wish me luck.

Sooo...How'd it go krypt?
Comrade Stalin
Very well. I need to get a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) license before I could be their research analyst. But I think this could be more than a job. They want 5 picks from me which seems like a test. If my picks are good, I believe I will get a big investment.

cool...good luck studying. It looks like a lot of stuff is included in the CFA. Remember, the internet is your friend. :)
