The 59 scoreless innings streak is just as impressive as a hit streak. It's consistency over a long period. That's over a month without letting up a run, damn impressive.

Now... don't get me wrong. I'm not taking anything away from Joe Dimaggio and what he did. He batted .408 during the streak, so that's pretty damn good. But...

Think about 59 scoreless innings in a row. In essence, Orel Hershisher, during that streak, never gave up a double with a runner on first. He never gave up a single with a runner on second. He never gave up a hit with a runner on third. And he never gave up a deep fly ball or a slow roller in the infield with a runner on third with less than two outs.

Of course, that may not be the case. Maybe there were slow runners out there. But, basically, he didn't do many of those things often.

To get a hit, there are many things that could happen. Poor defenders not reaching a ball in time or maybe just a well-placed pop up behind first. You can, theoretically, go 1 - 5 every game for 57 games and you'd have the new record. To get 59 scoreless innings in a row, you have to be totally on top of your game during that span. No bad pitches, cause there were obviously no homeruns hit, and not many hits given up when runners are on base.

59 innings is pretty crazy... figuring he averaged 7IP during that stretch... he would have gone 8+ games in a row without letting up a run. Thats insane. On the flip side, hitting in 56 consecutive games just looks so unattainable since no one has even gotten to the 40 hits mark since the record was set.

I think Orel's record will be harder to break because the league is just overflowing with hitters.

you make a strong argument, and i wouldn't disagree with anything you said. However, i personally believe that getting a hit everyday for two months (day in and day out) is just as impressive.

So I was in Tokyo while A-Rod hit 500 and Bonds tied Aaron.

Guess which event made front pages of the Japanese papers?

A-Rod's 500th homer :thepirate

Yeah, I never used to pay much mind to the scoreless inning streak. But yesterday, completely out of the blue, I started to think about it. And all that stuff came in my mind and I realized just how crazy it is to do that.

Hmmm... I don't even think he's close to being the greatest. But, we'll agree to disagree here.

I agree. They both stand alone as by far the most dominant streak in terms of hitting and pitching.

I still think Ted Williams hitting above .400 for an entire season is more impressive, but that's just me.
