WRONG. The catcher can miss the ball and the batter can advance. Plus runners can move into scoring position on a passed ball from a strike out.

And how often does that happen?

but jerZ give me your oppinion on walking bases loaded in tight games

I would walk the bases loaded in the NL during the beginning of a game to get the pitcher to the plate with two outs. Other than that I would a very rarely, if every walk someone to load the bases. I guess the only players i would walk are david ortiz, manny, vlad, pujols, etc... I don't like walking the bases loaded for a matchup where the pitcher is coming from the bullpen. That lefty/lefty, righty/righty matchup thing always has a way of punishing you.

I didn't see last night, so im not sure what happened.

regardless, you said when someone K's they're out and that's it. I was responding to that incorrect statement.

Anyway...steven made an excellent point. A strike out takes a minimum of 3 pitches, whereas you can get someone to ground out on 1 pitch.

yanks up 3-2 bot 7 - viz intentional walk to load them up - vizcaino is pulled for myers to pitch to carl crawford, crawford hits a 3-2 breaking ball left out over the plate for a grandslam. yanks rally for one top 8 but thats about it

Alright... I will just never understand why people DON'T like strike outs.

Whats everyone think of hughes tommorow? Too soon? Track records for pitchers coming up super early like hughes isn't too good... Prior, Wood, King Felix come to mind. They've got to limit him to 80-90 pitches.

i like K's, i just think its a bit overrated. WHIP is definitely more important than Ks.

^about Hughes....i think it might be too early. He hasn't really been doing too well this year. But you never know. I think Kazmir came up pretty early too.

These days pitchers are evaluated based on strikeouts, home runs, and walks (some include extra base hits, it's a debate). WHIP is an intriguing answer to ERA but it still doesn't erase the luck involved in, say, getting a single. Bill James argues that you can really only consider strikeouts, home runs and walks in an attempt to limit (as much as possible) the intangibles involved in singles and some extra base hits. The Sox, A's and Blue Jays all follow this extremely closely. Other teams (White Sox, Rangers and Yanks are all good examples) all do things a bit differently. Either way, it's an interesting argument.
