my best prediction was that drew was going to be a bum. but at the same time i didn't give matsuzaka enough credit. but i don't remember saying he was going to suck. |

I know I didnt expect this kind of year from him. I figured it would be more of the same. But at the end of the day, it doesnt mean about what you do in the regular season - the playoffs is where it counts. |

not true....first you need to make the playoffs. if you can't make the playoffs then you can't even evaluate playoff performance. so logically your season play is more important than your playoff performance. now, when an individual players performance doesn't determine whether a team makes the playoffs your logic may have some truth. However, if it wasn't for AROD, you could probably take 10 wins away from the yankees this season and we wouldn't even be in the race. His regular season performance this year should overshadow any post season downfalls he may have this year if we make it. He is the reason we are in the race. That is far more important than a performance in the playoffs that may never occur.

Point taken, but his playoff downfalls could play into whether or not Geroge wants him to stick around. because eventhough hes getting us to the playoffs, championships is all that matters to George. |

Lack of a hard cap and the lack of revenue sharing. It's much harder for a small market team to consistently put together winning teams because of those facts. The fact that a player has to stay with the team that drafted him for seven years helps in limiting the discrepancy between large and small market organizations but can't possibly be expected to solve the problem.
Even teams that draft extremely well (A's, Marlins) can't build a consistent, winning program because they can only really afford one star player at a time. This is why the Marlins are forced to dump major talent every 3-4 years. |

If in 3 weeks the Yanks have trimmed the lead down to five or fewer games than the AL East is up for grabs. The next 21 games, in terms of strength of schedule, heavily favors the Yankees. That, coupled with the return of Hughes, makes a surge from the Yanks seem almost obvious. That said, I don't know whether you guys can consistently get quality starts out of Mussina or Pettitte. You'll need that in order to have a legitimate shot because your middle relief is, frankly, not good.
Also, we're not the Red Sox of year ago. We don't hit as well but our pitching is much, much improved. Our bull pen has been, knock on wood, outstanding and our starting pitching has been good enough. We're not going to lose 8/10 or 7 in a row so the Yankees need to post a .750 and above winning % to have a legitimate shot. It's certainly doable.
The Wild Card, as I see it, is completely up for grabs. The Indians and Mariners will slide and that race will come down to the last 2 weeks of the season with the Yankees, M's and the Tribe vying for the final spot.
That's my .02 anyway |

B.J. Upton, FA after 2007 (no Team Options)
Delmon Young, FA after 2008 (depending on Major League service during those years- + the team has the right to option him to the minors 4 times- + if he is arbitration eligible by the 2008 season, then his 2008 salary of 700K will be voided- + with bonuses the total value of the deal can rise up to 6.2M)
Carl Crawford, FA after 2008 (Team Option for 2009 worth 8.25M or a 2.5M buyout- + if the 2009 option is exercised, then a Team Option for 2010 worth 10M or a 1.25M buyout is added- + 2010 option value could rise to 11.5M based on various escalators)
They have some serious on their hands. |
