how is signing clemens going to hurt the farm? It was a money transaction. Let's not forget wang. We still have sanchez and every other pitching prospect we picked up this offseason. Please explain how it hurts the minor league system. |
In the sense that the Clemens signing is an abrupt diversion from Cashman's GMing since '04 (The Sheffield Trade and the unwillingness to trade Melky & Cano are recent examples). Bill James showed that overspending in free agency has a direct hindrance on a team's ability to keep top prospects (through either trades or free agency). So, one must way that hindrance with what they're getting out of free agency, that's all I'm saying.
The Marlins (first WS win), Indians collapses after world series titles are two such examples of this trend. |

I don't really agree with that. the timing for free agency doesn't start until you enter the bigs (i think). Sanchez and the other guys from the arizona system aren't going to be hurt because they weren't coming up this year anyway. Clemens is wham bam kinda thing. He's gone after this year. I see it as a temporary fix that has little negative side effect, except that now i really can't afford to go to the games. Pretty soon yankees fans are going to be in the same position as sox fans with the worst seats going for at least 75 dollars. |

Actually, in the SABR community, a huge one year deal is always better than a smaller, multi-year deal. Clemens at 28 million for 1 year is a better deal than Clemens at 28 million over 3 years. Clemens for this one year is a better signing than Zito over 7 years is. |

farnesworth is a bum, and mariano is done. He needs to develop a change or a curve. He's not fooling anyone with his slowing cutter. |

I don't understand what's wrong with Farnsworth. He's got great stuff yet he cannot put it all together. I remember 3-4 years back when they signed him and there were talks about him eventually taking over for Mo. |

if he was working on it he sure isn't using it at all this year.

he can't get his fastball over the plate consistently. He always behind in the count and that's never good. MLB players aren't fooled by a 2-0 fastball right down the pipe, regardless of the speed. |

He has only been a Yankee for just over a year. I don't think he is the guy you want to take over the closer role. Great stuff but he seems to crack. The only time he was decent at saving games was in Atlanta. Overall he has 26 Saves and 26 Blown Saves. |

as for beckett, he's going to slide. While he looks good, he still hasn't faced any real offensive teams besides the yankees(where he was ok, not spectacular). I mean, seattle, KC, Bal, Oak, and LA. That's not exactly the cream of the crop as far as offensive powers. Before i say that beckett is hitting his stride, i would wait until he pitches against cleveland, detroit, texas (when they decide to start hitting), and the yankees again. After he gets rattled, i think he'll lose his stride again. The one thing he does have going for him is that he actually pitched a whole season last year. Maybe his arm is getting stronger. Who knows. i would just wait before you anoint him the savor. |
you can add Toronto to that list as well as the best start for a Boston pitcher since 1946. 7 starts, 7 wins. No muss, no fuss. |

that's more impressive! One run right?? That's the kinda win you can start getting happy about. Toronto has a good lineup, although they haven't consistently acted like they do. |
