Wow, I'd never imagine a whimsical attitude like that would spark such a long debate... oh well, as long as we're all entertained, that's what matters:

lira, i say do your thing. it's not a in funeral, man (which i think everyonen would've been offended had you've worn your chuck taylor's to that) |
Yeah, that's how I feel. Anyway, strangely enough, people dress casually here in funerals. The first time I went to a funeral, I wore something nice and black and, when I got there, everyone else was wearing jeans and t-shirts.
I think we may be ignoring the cultural component here - or at least the context, to be precise. You guys are taking the following things for granted:
- You assume the groom cares. The guy is my first friend ever, and we met before we even learnt how to speak, being born just a few months apart. He knows what I'm like and I know what he's like. I think it's fair to assume I wouldn't have ever done anything to bother the guy, don't you think? I'm hardly an inconsiderate person, as you probably know, albeit superficially.
It is true, however, that I do feel better around people that don't care, and assume more of a "live and let live" attitude. That explains my previous post.
- You assume you know "the rules". Sure, our cultural background is very similar (we all live in Christian countries, share a European ancestry and whatnot), but you guys are talking as if I did that in Canada (or in the US, whichever applies). Like I told Omega, people wear casual clothes here even in funerals, so the social rules are - to some extent - different.
- You assume I don't care, on the one hand. Like I even mentioned before, I didn't wear my beloved Adidas in many formal occasions, such as the lunch at the Japanese Embassy I mentioned a few posts ago. I would only do something if I felt I had the freedom to. I did, mainly, because I could do it.
- You assume I care, on the other hand. Seriously, I had never EVER in my whole life, found myself in a situation in which I had to justify the reason why I decided to wear something. I did wear them because they're comfy, and because I honestly think they look better than ordinary shoes. This is my simple "bull free" reply. I'm trying to come up with a reason for my actions because I usually do that but, do I even need an explanation? If you disagree, I'm sorry but this is all I've got, and I still see no reason why I should've worn anything else at all.
So, in the end, I wore them because I wanted to, and because I was allowed to. Given this context, I fail to understand why anyone not present at the wedding should begin to care.
