sorry to hear that mate. I completely agree that you are probably more saddened by this than me. I feel very remotely related to this, if at all. My college does have a NASA project (mirco-sat) that they will do this summer. Anyhow, I do feel sad for these people, and i am glad to hear that you are not going to dump your plans because of it!

| my cat is going to die. he's very sick and very old. i think it is sooooooooo ridiculous that the ONLY thing in life that is GUARANTEED is that you will die. think about that really deeply. it is not guaranteed that you will have money. it is not guaranteed that you will get married. it is not guaranteed that you will be happy. it is not guaranteed that you will even wake up tomorrow. but it is guaranteed that you will die. maybe 80 years from today. maybe an hour from today. and it makes you think "why?" why are we alive. what is the purpose? why do all of these things that we do if the next second you could be dead. last night while talking with my girlfriend, i thought about my aunt who passed away in september. and i got this huge rush of feelings and questions. why do some people die before others? why did my aunt, who had no one but her sister and brother and their kids, and who gave half of her earnings to us and the other half to charities, die in her sleep at age 54 when there are ing s running around shooting other people for their sneakers? why did that space shuttle do what it did? why did jfk get shot in the head. why do we live if we're only living to die? and no matter what you say, it is IMPOSSIBLE to live every second likes its your last. you may try, but it doesnt work. right now, im on the computer when i could be out doing anything. the world is ours and we do nothing but hurt. and even after this epiphany i had last night, i will still do the same. tomorrow i will wake up, turn on my comp, come on the internet and talk about trance music. i love talking to you guys and stuff, dont get me wrong, but you understand what i'm saying. there is no explanation for life. except that you die. |

Shamez, your post is a justification for religion.
If you are religious, then you have answers to the question that you are asking.
Yes, it may be disturbing to think that, _THE_ only thing that is certain is death. But think, birth/ life is certain too. If you were never born, you'd never die. Without life -> no death. Would we be able to define life, if there was no death?
I am angostic/ atheist. I do not think that there is anything after you die. It would be a nice suprise, but I don't think that there is an afterlife and god etc. So I have a really big problem with dieing and living. Right now I am alive and when I die, it's over. So why should I care for life and do something? Maybe, because I hope that I will have children at some point and I want to leave them with more than I had when I started out a couple of years ago. Therefore I will try to do my best to improve myself and have as much =positive= influence on the world as I can.
Lastly, don't you think living is fun? |

i understand where you are coming from, and yes... i do believe in a god. but i'm not all HOLY HOLY. i just think the entire point of life is weird. why are we here? why are we alive? what is the purpose of it? it just doesnt make sense? and think, what is time? 4 billion years ago, what was there? if there was no earth, what was there? and even before that... 4 billion years before that? what was going on? and 10 billion years before that? it just makes no sense. we are living to die. so whats the purpose. whats the purpose if life if theres death and vice versa?? these questions wont ever be answered, so ill just beat myself up and hurt my head with them while i can.
and yes, living is very fun. and maybe dying is too. you will NEVER know... until it happens. |

good point, but u know what is even more bothersome:
We are all trying to improve the earth et al. but in the end, whatever we do, we cannot create energy. And the way we use up resources, we are decreasing entropy all the time. Everthing will end up in a state of most randomness eventually. That means that at some point, NOTHING can be done anymore.
Additionally, think about the universe, it is expanding, true. But, for all we know now, there is no 'range' limit on gravity. Therefore, the universe should collapse at some point. Or maybe it will expand forever, but -the question becomes at that point- WHERE TO? |

exactly! why is the earth where it is? when did the earth appear? when did time begin? how is it possible that in the entire universe (which still makes my brain hurt) there is no other life? aliens definitely do exist, although maybe not in the form of typical aliens. and i believe that eventually the earth will just crumble. we pick and pick and pick at it. eveentually there will be nothing left. i dunno, though the whole outer space thing always made me go crazy. if there is anything that will boggle your mind, it is the universe. it makes absolutely NO SENSE. it's just there... but why? and for anyone that doesnt believe in aliens... WHAT WOULD BE THE PURPOSE OF THE UNIVERSE IF THERE WERE NONE? anyway... this conversation would be 1000 times more profound if we were both on 'shrooms. i've had conversations like this before and if you thought your brain hurt now... YIKES. i thought my brain was just gonna fall out of my head. in closing... everything is weird. so, i'll just be weird in order to compensate! |
|
|
| drizzt81 |
I don't think i need 'shrooms to figure out that there is a lot in the universe that does not make sense, but the problem is that for many problems, you and i just do not know enough to understand the fundamentals.
Think about it, if it wasn't for Keppler, Newton, Galileo and our good friend Einstein (and MANY MANY MANY more people) we wouldn't even know about the lack of purpose in the universe. At some point, maybe another guy will come along and figure out something that will tell you how more stuff works and that will throw open new questions.
Science does tell us why or how something works and can explain why certain 'things' exits, but it does not explain how come it was created in the first place.
What many people do not realize that that for that ^^^^ reason, religion and science are not contradictory, but complementary.
[ps.: now it would be cool if we could export the last couple of posts to another thread..] |
|
|
| Shamez214 |
i know what you mean about those scientists. without those people, we'd all be sheep just walking around thinking the earth is flat and that we're just here, for no reason other than god. and you're definitely right about someone else. someone else will come along and prove something else that no one's ever thought of. its just so damn weird. and i've always thought religion and science to be together in some ways. when i die, too many things will be left unanswered. there are things DEEEEP in the ocean that have NEVER been seen because of gravity. there could be a million new species just waiting to be discovered down there. and dinosaurs... DINOSAURSSSS!!!! that is so weird. they ruled the ENTIRE planet and yet they've been gone for millions of years. there are NO dinosaurs left... why is that? no one knows... its not even like dodo birds or tigers... thats just one species. but think about the entire human race being erased and something else taking over the world. thats what happened to the dinosaurs. their time was up, so they all died. when is our time going to be up? probably a lot sooner than the dinos...
and this would make a very good discussion topic. but alot of people couldnt talk intellectually about it, you know? not saying me and you are genius', i know i am not, but just it would get overcrowded with one sentence replies and blah blah. i just wish more TAs would reply. its nice to get an general idea of what people think about this stuff. |
|
|
| drizzt81 |
there are many ways the dinosaurs could have died out.. and i mean, they didn't all die in one day neccessarily.. i mean, a simple virus, that was just specialized for dinos killed them all and then it died out too...
well, many many questions that want answering. |
