FRIDAY, JUNE 29, 2001: MAURO PICOTTO || JOHN B.
Regular Admission: $12 before 11 p.m. | $15 after 11 p.m.
We started off this month with Judge Jules, so it's fitting we close out June with the man who produces for Jules' favorite label of the past year -- BXR (according to www.ministryofsound.com). The Italian-based BXR label, which is released through Nukleuz in the U.K., bridges elements of trance and U.K. Hard House, but has more recently branched off into more techno influences. The end result is full-on, stompin', high-energy dancefloor mayhem. Much like their drum 'n' bass brethren, Picotto and his label-mates are reviving elements of an earlier era in 4-to-the-floor dance music. These producers are blurring the boundaries between trance, house and techno, by breaking many of the established rules from the last half-decade of dance music culture.

People have this fascination with those who break the mold. Akin to Mauro Picotto's disregard for the rigid conventions of trance and techno, John B. has flirted with atypical drum 'n' bass influences like salsa and cinematic movie scores. His smashing success with the Metalheadz tune, "Up All Night" is a diva-fueled fury of emotion that will finally get released this summer. John B. hasn't performed at Nation since ¡Mango! last summer, so this is a rare Buzz appearance.

| About Zed Bias -- written by Snapdragon |
Zed Bias is known in the UK Garage scene as an innovator. Coming from a rare groove DJ background, Zed Bias knows that if you don't have soul in your sets or in your productions, then what you're making is substandard. Zed Bias first exploded onto the scene with his remix of ES Dubs "Standard Hoodlum Issue" with the sample "reflex action like a snake" and tight, funked up drums making it an almost instantaneous anthem. However, it is with the release of "Neighbourhood" last year that he rose from the underground to become one of the leading figures in Breakbeat Garage. At Honeydew II expect something a little rawer, a little heavier, but no less soulful from this king of the ungerground.
| About Dee Kline -- written by Snapdragon |
When is your sound truly underground? When it's an anthem spun only on pirate radio until the rest of the world wakes up to it (including Prince Charles)? When the UK Garage Committee calls a meeting to stifle your track and your sound? When your infectious tracks and remixes make you a star in a scene that doesn't exist yet? All of these things happened to Breakbeat Garage Producer/DJ Dee Kline in the year 2000. Rather than backing down, he stepped up to the challenge and produced the crowd favorites "The Fame and the Money", "Every Posse and Crew" (with Nu-skool Breaks legend Freq Nasty), and remixed Mellow Trax's "Outta Space". Coming from a breaks background, Dee Kline knows what it takes to move a dance floor with basslines that rumble and drums that kick. Expect nothing less than to look up to the DJ booth on July 6th and wonder what kind of internal damage these tracks are doing to your organs.
