im getting excited about race driver: grid. a racing game that doesn't reward you for riding walls nor revolve around pimping your ride or winning pink slips.
ive always loved the fine line between arcade and sim that the TOCA series has skated. i dont have the time nor inclination to spend hours refining my springs or brake bias settings like i used to(ala precision racing, indycar 1&2, grand prix legends etc).
i want a game where all i do is race and has physics that reward you for knowing how to brake and overtake (unlike the NFS games which just sucks huge amounts of cock).
grid is coming to all platforms in june

the early TOCA games were good then that went to too
although not as bad as NFS, which is just a joke now.
this one sounds like it has potential.
still, forza motorsport wins all. |

how did toca go to ? toca 3 is one of the best racing games ive ever played, going back as far as grand prix circuit in the mid 80s on the C64.
toca3 certainly isnt as accurate as the simulation games, but its not trying to be. if you didn't like toca 3 you won't like grid. its still an "arcade sim", like 3 was.
oh, and GTR2 > forza. but maybe that's my bias because i think playing with thumbs is just crap ;)
oh, one thing that's new & cool about grid is that it has a long list of common first names, so if your name is on the list you'll get personalised voice overs like
"hey pkcRAISTLIN, that was one ing awesome lap!"
...my word it will be :) |

I thought GTR wasn't bad, but didn't like the AI.
and it's ing hard.
and they just kept churning out toca every year, the only difference is slowly more and more arcade like. |

Oh yeah, way way too fvcking hard! I loved those games before I got a job and could spend the whole day tuning the perfect race or qualifying setup. But fvck, not now. I just wanna turn the PC on put the foot down. |

oh look, what little time ive had with them i thought they were pretty damn cool. but they never made it to the PC (i think?) , so never had that much exposure. and when the original GT games came out, the steering wheels for PS's were rubbish.
i do find that too many people call it the the "most realistic racer ever" which just isnt true. |

| Tuesday.. GTA4 officially released! Has anyone pre-ordered their copy yet? If so where? I know Big W has it going for $84 I believe (x360 version.) Most places are offering discounts for those that preorder it. Not a bad idea considering that it is selling for $120... so damn expensive. |

true however the cars you have access to and the ability to customize stuff ie stability control, differentials, etc play a big part
i agree about the pc factor - pc is far greater than consoles imo for most genres of games |

This is why you should have bought a ps3 - region free games means you can buy them on ebay for way cheaper.. I pay 60-70 for every game I buy.. oh whats that? in 4 games I made up the price difference between the 360 and the ps3? :-)

Grand Theft Auto 4 set to blast sales records.
-Grand Theft Auto 4's characters are underworld criminals armed to the teeth
-GTA 4 has a "Mature" rating, meaning it is intended for users 17 years old or older
-The video game industry estimates "GTA 4" will sell 6 million copies in the first week.
NEW YORK (CNN) -- The fourth installment of the controversial video game "Grand Theft Auto" goes on sale worldwide Tuesday with expectations that it will break sales records.
GTA 4 has a "Mature" rating, meaning it is intended for users 17 years old or older.
Grand Theft Auto 4 is loud, violent, and racy -- and gaming fanatics can't wait to play it, some even vowing to take the day off work or school to get their hands on it.
The video game industry estimates "GTA 4" will sell about 6 million copies and make about $400 million in sales worldwide in its first week alone. If those numbers hold up, the game would break the record held by the current all-time sales champ, Halo 3.
One reason for the great expectations is that the fourth version of Grand Theft Auto can be played on Microsoft's Xbox 360 as well as Sony's Playstation 3.
Game box makers, which are featuring GTA 4 on their Web sites, hope the game will bring increased sales. Gaming retailers also are looking forward to the shoot-'em-up.
"It is probably one of our top-selling products for us in 2008," said Chris Olivera, spokesman for video game retailer Gamestop. "Overall, it will probably be one of the top three best-selling video games ever."
The premise of the Grand Theft Auto series is controversial, with characters who are underworld criminals armed to the teeth, but that's also part of the game's appeal. Watch gamers talk about their excitement about the game »
"Controversy does sell, but it is targeted to an older audience," said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at market research firm Jupiter Research. "It is not geared to children."
GTA 4 has a "Mature" rating, meaning it is intended for users 17 years old or older. The game's label warns of blood, intense violence, partial nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, use of alcohol, and use of drugs.
That mature rating, however, stopped parents groups from blasting Grand Theft Auto and its creator, Rockstar Games.
"A heavy diet of these games puts kids at risk for aggression," says the National Institute for Media and the Family, an independent non-profit group that researches the effects of media on children.
Police groups have also raised concerns, and in Chicago, ads for GTA 4 have been removed from buses and trains. |
