STALKER
well, in between supreme commander marathons i finally managed to make my way through this innovative shooter. warning kids- the game is HARD. never in my life have i been forced to re-start an FPS coz i'd cranked the difficulty up too far! even on the default difficulty settings this game is nicely challenging. part of this is the annoying inherent inaccuracy of the weapons, but this also makes for some great firefights with bullets going all over the place. combat isnt rogue spear realistic, but is still unforgiving to say the least! luckily there are ample health packs (on default difficulty) so healing mid-fight is the order of the day. that said though, sometimes you'll still find yourself avoiding combat if youre running low on health or ammo. the AI is some of the best you'll see in a shooter, if you forgive the bugs that crop up from time to time (enemies shooting thru walls being a particular pet peeve of mine).
the outside graphics were a bit bland for my tastes, however the lighting effects are top notch and storms look great. once you're inside a location though the game really does look very good, and there are plenty of spooky moments to be had with creatures lunging out of the darkness and making pkc cry out like a little girl. for some reason though i had an issue with a tiny pause every few seconds when running outside. couldn't fix that issue. overall the game looks and plays really well and certainly helps you feel like youre really in that nuclear wasteland.
the roleplaying element of the game was very cool, though could have used a bit more explanation. for instance doing certain quests would make enemies of other factions who's contacts you would need to complete the story-related quests. there are some areas where the use of weapons is forbidden, and having some enemies in there was a right pain in the arse. still tho, asides from that the missions were somewhat varied and a lot of fun to get into. after a while though you realise you've got all the goodies you need and the extra quests arent worth the time and ammo. (yes, ammo is very important).
the latter missions are tough. but a helluva lot of fun. going on everywhere and no time for rest. getting the shot out of you every few seconds though can be a bit frustrating. still, making it thru to the end is all the sweeter if its been tough going imo.
bugs aside (and youre bound to get them in a game of this scope) this was a really solid game and well worth the wait. a bit more emphasis on the politics in the region and factional alliances would have been good, it still felt a bit too much "one man army", but when you did work in a team it was great.
the ending was a bit of a let down, but kind've cool at the same time. maybe i was after a bit more majesty ;)

battlestar galactica

February 9, 2007 - Today Sierra Online, a division of Vivendi, announced it is bringing the hit sci-fi show Battlestar Galactica to PCs this fall. As the game is also slated to be released on Xbox Live Arcade, fans can hone their Cylon-detecting skills with Galactica gear like Gamer Pics and Themepacks available on the Xbox Live Marketplace starting today.
"NBC Universal is working closely with us so that players will be able immerse themselves in the Battlestar Galactica universe and re-live their favorite missions from the TV series," said Ed Zobrist, president of Sierra Online.
Developed by Australia-based Auran (Trainz), Battlestar Galactica will include both single- and multi-player modes and allow players to fight as either a human or a Cylon in ships that fans of the show will recognize. |

sorry gumbum, but you seem to be a little confused. no games are made vista only currently. those that support DX10 are obviously vista only, but i just checked dirt and it runs on xp.
but holy . is a 12Gb install! |
