Yep. The need to read a movie takes away from both the nuances of the film, the shooting style, etc. You can't pay attention to the words and fully understand what is going on in the scene.

Also, I really have an absolute disdain for movies that are translated. When I watched both Das Boot and Lola Rennt in either English or with subtitles, they were great examples of why it just doesn't work very well. You can't get the right inflection, gravity, etc with what they are saying.

Are you arguing that movies shouldn't be watched in anything but their native language? Neither subtitled or dubbed? If so, obviously it's ideal to get as close to the original as possible, but isn't watching it translated and getting most of the meaning better than none at all? I think so.

One thing about subtitles though, I think it should be declared at the onset that a movie is subbed, either at the theater or on the cover of the DVD box. I'm cool with subs as long as I know what I'm in for. Case in point, Pan's Labyrinth. If I had known beforehand I probably would've been more receptive to it.

I don't think that necessarily they shouldn't be, as some people like them. Do I like them? No. Do I see them as defeating the purpose of watching a movie? Yes.

I totally agree with this. Not knowing if it is subbed or not and finding out after the fact blows ass.

This subtitle thing is ridiculous. I'm sorry you feel that way, man.

As for dubbing, I think it is the most atrocious thing ever to be invented.

Was that an insult? Standard operating procedure for you seems to be to insult someone else's opinion or taste and then flap your wings and make a fit when there's pushback.

Sorry your feathers got ruffled.

Ah, there we have it.

It's actually fairly famous, and it came up when renzo asked what I've seen lately and I mentioned that I currently have that from Netflix but haven't seen it yet. If you want to read something into a comment like that, be my guest. We all know your powers of inductive reasoning border on paranoia.

If you want more recommendations in the same vein, let me know. Those are, as you know, my (not so) guilty pleasures.

I have no problem in this area. Maybe you're just a slow reader, gehz :p

Anyways, movies I always recommend to people:

Lost in Translation
Traffic
It's All Gone Pete Tong
The Constant Gardener
La Haine
