While you've got a damn good point there, the film is seriously flawed both to those who know nothing about drugs (it makes them think things that are not true about drugs or the culture) and to those who do (who know all the mistakes made as pointed out), which to me makes the film a waste. It's actually so lame to hear that people use that film as an excuse not to do drugs - not that it's a bad thought in itself, just I can think of at least 3 other films that are far better and poignent as deterrents.
As Omega pointed out, the film simply wouldn't work without those deeply flawed story lines and I feel it's as purposely gratuitous as it is purposely inaccurate - IMO, it tries to shock for it's own success and aside from not being believable it's not really a subject matter that needs that. I have friends who have died from overdoses and got in worse situations than portrayed in requiem and makes me dislike the film even more.
And don't get me wrong, I know it's not a documentary, but it's also not a fantasy so at least the major sub story has to be based in realism which I find are done so badly the film loses any depth. |

It's the movies. They don't have to have a correct perception of reality. That is the point of a film. It is an escape FROM reality. Why does it have to portray a situation in the same ways as life? |

It doesn't have to be real at all, but clearly tries to depict "it could be you characters" for the purpose of securing your involvement - the realism is what is trying to get at you, but the realism is so flawed by gaping holes in the substory that it fails to be believable.
So the suspension of disbelief is completely broken, and creating and maintaining that is what good film making is about, regardless of whether the film is meant to be realistic or not. Fantasy stories still have to have that suspension, so you can properly relate and not just cast it of as disposable.
I know, you're just meant to go with it, its the movies, but I just think that film, for all the hype and the boner (bonii?) people have about it is so badly over respected as some kind of cultural milestone. Some of the scenes are done very well (Mum gradually tripping out etc), which is also what annoys me because they are executed to a high level where upon the story itself undoes that finesse. |

i wouldn't say movies necessarily have to be a form of escapism though it often is. all i'm saying is, they could've (if the film wasn't based on a book, which it is) changed some elements of the plot, minor ones even, that could've given the film more credibility and thus more impact.
it's more personal taste than anything, as i still enjoyed the film (i DID end up watching it again last night and enjoyed it just as much as before) and think that it's one of aronofsky's better works, but i again felt that due to its subject matter and the message that it implies, it should've been based more firmly on reality than slightly unbelievable "what-a-goddamned-ridiculous-coincidence" situations and the minor quips such as the pupil dilation thing that could've easily, easily been remedied. |

(IMO) I couldn't stand the movie, RFDream.. it's just too vulgar and tacky..seeing the guy's arm get destroyed and watching the girl become a whore just made me want to stand up and turn the dvd player off. Maybe I'm just a weakling :p

tbh i think the most disturbing part of the movie is the plot with the guy's mom going nuts from amphetamine psychosis/starvation. she played that part extremely well, imo. |

The thing is, you find it sad because you are around a culture that makes drugs such a taboo and as a result, treat people that are involved in them, upstanding or not, like . As if they are rapists or child molesters. |
