Hey me too. NPR only since November. Actually, my officemate (who is a huge Hillary supporter) keeps firing all these shots that he gets off of CNN and the like about what's wrong with Obama - things I NEVER hear about anymore.
CNN, Fox, and MSNBC is bull news. All hype, no content. |
It's been mostly print media for me. For my summer job I got to meet a few reporters for the Washington Post and saw that they get super defensive about the tripe on the major networks. Once they started stressing how rigorously they have to research and carefully they frame their stories I realized what a HUGE difference there is between televised news (which is really just entertainment), and the serious press that works in radio and in print.
And I've started reading editorials more seriously - if you know a bias beforehand it makes it much easier to glean the good points from the mere partisanship, and puts the burden on the writer to actually convince.
But in the end, I'm something of a C-SPAN junkie... I like to hear things straight from the horse's mouth and not after it's been filtered by Lou Dobbs or Tucker Carlson.
There are also some pretty good websites out there - like mediamatters or talkingpointsmemo - that do a good job of sourcing popular stories in the mainstream media and revealing inconsistencies and mischaracterizations. |

Correct. Now think about how many people consider it relevant. :p |
my point was only that you can't really blame "the media." Anytime people blame the media that blame should really lie with uninformed and foolish people who take what is said by sean hannity, lou dobbs, etc.... as gospel. i agree with Lebezniatnikov that TV is the worst kind of journalism.
on a side note related to tv and print media, if someone can't form an argument on paper, then their position is truly soft. With TV media, the socalled journalists can sway your opinions with emotions (through facial expressions, vocal intonations, images, videos, etc...). That element is largely removed by print media. It's difficult to express emotions in a persuasive manner through writing. |

Speaking of prose, it's so much more clever.
Maureen Dowd, Queen of Snark, in the Times today:
| quote: | Obama is basing his campaign on his freshness and integrity and honesty, so he shouldn’t cut corners, as he seems to have done with crediting Patrick and explaining the extent of his relationship with his sleazy former fund-raiser, Tony Rezko.
The attribution problem might be small beer compared with Michelle Obama’s comment in Milwaukee on Monday: “For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change.”
It’s a discordant note for the stylish, brainy 44-year-old Princeton and Harvard Law School grad. Cindy McCain showed that Republicans would jump right on a line like that, and twist it into something that sounded extremist and unpatriotic.
Michelle made another of these aggrieved pronouncements at a rally in Los Angeles before the California primary: “Things have gotten progressively worse, throughout my lifetime, through Democratic and Republican administrations, it hasn’t gotten better for regular folks.”
Given the way the Clintons unfairly turn the tables, we’re only moments away from Hillary asking Obama: “Can’t you control your spouse?” |

"For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change."
And you know, I see nothing wrong with this comment. The media is playing it as if she said "for the first time in my lifetime Im proud to be an American." That's most definitely NOT what she said. |

and you really shouldn't blame "the media" if people eventually think that is what she said. certainly "the media" plays a role by mistating what was said, but at the end of the day the blame is on the uninformed people who believe everything that is said by tv personalities. by now people should know that what you hear on tv is half truths and partisan propaganda. |
