| 40 years of tax cuts and 40 years of degrading infrastructure... |

| Personally, I think that we generate plenty of tax revenue already. It's just that we spend it on the wrong things (like stupid wars). |

Which I imagine makes it relatively easy to see how at least some of us with only a rudimentary understanding of the U.S. economy can want there be more. :p
I still think that we have a comparatively low contemporary income tax rate when taken relative to other Western economies, and believe that even if we weren't spending so much money on stupid wars and special interests, there'd still be a deficiency in funds for eduction, infrastructure that doesn't rely on gasoline, and health care (the three areas I'd like to see the most tax money go towards). |

More on the alleged tape of Obama's wife "railing against whitey": someone is apparently looking to pay a million dollars to purchase it, if it indeed exists.
| quote: | Here’s the news short and sweet–if you have a copy of the Michelle Obama video, in which she is lambasting white people (four different sources say she uses “whitey” as an epithet) at Jeremiah Wright’s church, then there is an ultra conservative Republican billionaire who wants to pay your $1 million dollars for the tape. Why? He hates John McCain. Conservative Republicans refer to John McCain as a Marxist and a sell out (and those are the nice comments). The billionaire in question believes Barack is a very weak candidate and, if he gets the Democratic nod, then McCain will surely be President. Especially after the October “surprise” of Michelle Obama railing against whitey. The billionaire wants to preempt McCain and Rove and has put the word out thru conservative networks that there is a $1 million dollar bounty for the person or persons who produce the tape.
I got this info courtesy of a major Republican operative. I am told that Karl Rove and his political allies control the tape where Michelle Obama has a Stokely Carmichael moment of sorts. Rove and company reportedly are showing the tape to big money Republicans to loosen up their wallets and get new money to fund independent expenditure groups. That’s why news of this is starting to leak out. The money is being raised for 527 groups that will target the Democrats in the fall.
A retired CIA buddy is friends with a lawyer who saw the tape. This lawyer, who has a stellar reputation for being very low-key, described the video clip of Michelle’s anti-white rant as, “stunning.” My guess is that the billionaire who detests John McCain is probably going to find someone who will comes up with the tape. So there you have it, someone is looking for “Whitey.” If they find it they get a pay day. If not, you will have to wait till October to watch it. |

But I'm guessing that if this is for real (which is starting to seem a bit more likely), then copies of it have already been made. |

I hope it is released. That makes Cindy "I slept with a married man and invested in companies that fund the janjaweed" McCain fair game. |

It would be the saddest day in American history since september 11th 2001. Yes I said that. |
That's not dramatic at all............ Political parties, especially the Republicans, have been trapping the opposition and showing oppositions' foots in their mouths ruthlessly for decades, it's politics. I don't see how the fact that this might affect Obama now all of a sudden makes this a travesty. Look, when he's chosen as candidate, he's my candidate too, I personally would not want all this to come out that's gunna hurt him; but comparing the outing of damaging foot-in-mouthage video does not compare to 3000 dead on September 11th, sorry. It happens every four years. |

Also, everybody glosses over the fact that John McCain has a lot of baggage as well. Just for starters, his wife had investments in the Sudanese government - you know, the one carrying out a genocide? He called her a cvnt in front of a microphone once. He voted against banning waterboarding. He voted against the new GI Bill. He physically assaulted a fellow Senator IN the Capital Building.
I refuse to believe that the word "whitey", given entirely without context but purported to have been spoken in an as-of-yet unseen video, is a cause for any real concern. |
I wanna say you're gunna be right but I don't think the Democratic party/campaign has the balls or know-how to make a big deal out of any of this. Look at how easy Bush was to poke holes through (Air National Guard story, cocaine story, etc.), and yet the party stood there picking their noses. Sometimes I do think we need a Karl Rove on our side, maybe we might actually win the presidency. |

I guess I'm one of the few in the c0r who doesn't want higher taxes or a more socialized tax system. This is one of the main reasons I'm against Obama, not to mention his stance on capital gains taxes and a veritable laundry list of other things. I'm far more in favor of a Fair Tax or something in that regard.
In the end, I loathe McCain as well, so for me, whoever wins, we lose :/ |

No, you're not alone. I, too, can't see the need for higher taxes and more socialized systems. From what I've seen in 31 years, the government does a pretty good job of NOT doing a pretty good job. And living in the rural Southeast, I've seen plenty of people who spend their entire lives "on the system," and I just can't convince myself that we need more of that kind of dependency. |

Well there's your problem. :p
Seriously though, I don't know what you mean by "in the system" - because the broken system you're referring to isn't what I'm advocating/looking for.
Part of the reason you've seen government programs "not work" in your 31 years is because throughout the duration of your life they've basically either cut taxes or chosen frivelous/ridiculous things to spend tax revenue on so often that there isn't any money for the "system" to work well, which is only compounded by the fact that the current system didn't work in the first place.
The kind of dependency you're talking about is not in the least the kind of lifestyle that I, or many others, are looking to perpetuate.
Adam, I'd really like to read your laundry list. ;) |
