| WTF!!!!!!! VIP was suppose to include "Complimentary snacks and refreshments" but none of the VIP places served anything free. Not even water. So we had to cough 5 dollars each time to get cold water. A lot of VIP ppl were complaining. INSOMIAC better fricken fix this for day 2 and 3. This is really unacceptable. |

| I did VIP at Noc and MM last year, and enjoyed it both times. As soon as I saw that VIP for EDC wasn't open bar, though, I started to wonder exactly what the point was. |

The VIP experience was very disappointing. I asked for free refreshments/snacks. None of the bartenders/staff around in the VIP areas had even heard about it, but they said that everyone asked about it.
The VIP area at Kinetic was too small. Too many people. Only two bars with huge lines all night. It was faster to walk to the GA bars and back. The VIP area didn't open until 10pm. The bars opened about 30 minutes after that.
The VIP area at the disco stage.. Nothing interesting. No people, a few small bars. One hot dog stand. No restrooms. |

circuitGROUNDS was the misting tent, although disappointing and really did not look record setting although who knows how guinness gauges it for the record books. It basically outlined the metal frame but nothing inside of it |

Day one was alright. No major issues except sore feet... lol. Then again, I already spent three days walking the strip with various friends.
We got there a little late, and we were driving. The drive in wasn't too bad, but it did feel a bit disorganized. As per my norm now, we avoided the 15 at all costs, and just took side streets. No major issues until we were about a mile from the venue, which seems pretty normal for any concert I've been too. Outside the venue they should have coned off the individual lanes because line cutting with cars was a huge issue and the reason traffic sucked. Once inside the venue we parked in no more than 5 minutes. No hassles or anything.
Line control wasn't a big issue either. ID scan was quick, though one entrance the scanners weren't working so that caused some flooding at the other entrances. The male line we were in seemed to go pretty quickly, so I'd say we only had maybe a 15 minute wait in both lines. ID scan lines were separate from the security checkpoint.
Once inside we had to wait for our female friend. THAT line was slow... we waited nearly 30+ minutes to get in. Once she got in it was a quick jump into the stadium and the sea of light from the various stages. Most of the time, I never noticed sound leakage. The exception was near the Pagoda art, but that understandable considering how far away you are from the CosmicMeadow stage. Sound was on point at all stages in my opinion, though I didn't stay around a few to know. The CosmicMeadow bass was unbelievable, and the sound there was awesome.
Acts I saw and comments:
Royksopp - They were interesting though I only caught their last few tracks as we explored some of the art at the back. Check out the Rabbit Hole art by Neon garden if you haven't, its a fun little gimmick. =0)
Tara Brooks - Another one of the growing pool of recognized DJs from San Diego, Tara played a nice set before Richie donned the Plastikman motif. We were up front for her set to be in a great spot for Richie. Everything was cool during her set, and she played a good number of tracks I have in my own bag. It was a good mix of current and older tracks.
Plastikman - I was surprised by the stage setup for this one. I really went in not knowing what to expect though. Richie was behind an LED screen the whole time that was very active to the music and what it was doing. Loads of colors and beat matched effects made for a really neat show. We left the stage when he had about 30 minutes to go get the water bottles and some other loot. They were sold out at the time, but I did get my shirt and CD.
Skream & Benga - As an introduction to the BassPod they were a nice touch to hear how well the sound was executed on the stage. The bass could be a touch higher I think, but I know part of the reason was to prevent sound bleeding from stage to stage. One of my group members wanted to hang out and said they did really well, including dropping some old Dubstep to "educate the crowd."
DJ Frances - The Domes we way fun and probably the coolest place on the grounds. There was a separate ID check here, more than likely linked to the product sponsor. I got a beer and a water for 12 bucks (Water was a 5.) Frances was tearing up the other dome quite well, and should be playing more like she was at EDC in San Diego in my opinion. She looked so happy to be there, so it was treat to see yet another of my friends from SD making more out of the scene.
Sub Focus - At this point, I left Frances to go meet up with my buddy again so we could catch Sub Focus. When we met again, the store had the reusable bottles again, so we all bought one. We meandered back to the CosmicMeadow and saw Sub Focus tearing it up already. he may have been 10 to 15 minutes into his set, but he wasn't holding back. I found his set the best overall performance, with Plastikman being a close second. Sub Focus had the energy I expected and it was neat to hear him cut up and live remix his tracks. He also played two new tracks and he might have taken my request for the night and dropped a classic in there (X-Ray.) The MC was doing a decent job, but he did use the "I only have one question for you" line too often.
Sander van Doorn - After Sub Focus finished up we all went and got some water at the water stand. No problems there as it was staffed and there were no lines. We kept going around, figured out the the circuitGrounds stage is the "World's largest cooling tent." It was interesting to see, but I'm not sure on its functionality. We eventually got to the kineticField as Steve was finishing his set with "Save the World." The stage is a massive thing, but the area and how it was walled in with the VIP setup didn't work so well, especially because you couldn't access the seats nearby in the stands. We only stayed for maybe 3 of Sander's songs, so I'll look up his set since I hear it was pretty good. The intro was rather bland in my opinion.
Marky - When we got back to the bassPod, Marky was tearing up with Armanni Reign and another MC I wont name :tongue2. he tore it up going around liquid DnB and smashing it up with straight up DnB. His set was really cool to hear and worked rather well. he dropped LK and the crowd went bonkers, evening singing along. It's an absolute classic, and was so refreshing to hear something like that again!
TC - A bit of a disappointment to close out the night as I thought that we would hear more of his last LP. Instead we got a roller coaster ride of Dubstep and DnB, which was okay. I'm not a dubstep fan but the tunes he played were alright for that time of the party. I had to chuckle as I heard at least 2, if not 3, Sub Focus tracks while we were there. I made the joke to my buddy, "#1 rule for a DnB DJ - If in doubt or your set isn't working the way you thought, drop a Sub Focus tune. The crowd will eat it up." We laughed and wished we had heard some "Where's My Money" "Jump" or "Flatline."
We left shortly before the event closed with most of the crowd. The drive back was pretty easy, especially once we were able to get onto the 15. There was a lot of law enforcement out as well which I think helped. Overall, a good experience, but not great. Tonight is our short night, as we are going to try and catch Above & Beyond tomorrow at Tao Beach. The back half of the Saturday lineup just bores me to tears. |

Also, very disappointed in the Cosmic Gate set from last night. I happened to tune into their set from Beta in Denver on Thursday night on DI.FM and it was pretty much the same set with several songs mixed in the same order.
They went back-to-back-to-back with three in a row in the same order that they did in Denver on a couple of occasions and they went back-to-back with two in a row a couple of times.
Very predictable and just lazy in my opinion to do something like that. |
