I don't get all the bitching here. Just get a 3 day pass and go to the days you want. You know what it's gonna be, and that Facebook page has a whole bunch of confirmed acts. Don't keep pretending you think some sort of underground artist will come and get a mainstage spot or something; it's just not going to happen. This will appeal to the masses, and I am not afraid to admit that I like the mainstream. I'm down to see Tiesto, SHM, Afrojack, Sander van Doorn, Ferry Corsten, etc. If you're not, then don't go to EDC and stop complaining. They're going to make a load of money with or without you, it may be somewhat unfortunate but it's the truth.

First:

1) Where are these confirmed acts? Has Insomniac confirmed them? Not on the EDC facebook page for sure. I know of the ones I've checked into, but its still by far an insignificant number of the total DJs performing. I hate Tiesto's current sound, SHM are overplayed (the only guy I can stand is Axwell anymore, Steve is horrible). SVD's last series of productions have had me losing more and more faith in the guy. Afrojack & Ferry are not confirmed for Vegas. Do some research on the names you list. Those names are confirmed at other EDC's. Afrojack hasn't been confirmed at EDC Vegas... and even if he is listed in Vegas, he has a summer residency there.

What I want to know is two fold:
2) Where the hell is new talent? , with the names they have they can pull some new names in. It's not hard. Where are the High Contrast Recordings artists (Leon, SvR, Jochen Miller, Marco V, etc.)? Where is Andy C or SubFocus (btw... do the research and you'd find out he is playing a similarly named festival in the UK... though people thought he was confirmed for EDC)? Where's someone like Eric Prydz? I'm not listen underground names... I'm listen big names over the last 5 years. Where's Markus or other Armada DJ's that isn't Dash Berlin? Where is trance, tech house, or techno?

3) If I'm forking over roughly $200 I want to know that I'm going to have fun. I'm over Electro outside of DJs that DO SOMETHING else with it (Luke and his mixing skills are an example of this.) I cannot believe the popularity of dubstep. I ing hate that genre, but I have a feeling a whole stage (the 6th stage they are adding) will be that bull that people think is music.

4) I guess here's the point I was making about these lineups for all these massives. It's BORINGLY repetitive. The only names I saw new at BW were Showtek and the Techno stage. The only draw to that event would have been Hawtin, and maybe some of the DnB guys (Netsky and Dirtyphonics may have been some of a draw for me, Fresh could have been cool if he didn't play a ton of so called "Dubstep".) Ultra was okay, but I'm not traveling all the way to Miami for it. I went to TAO to go with friends and to see Luke, that was all there. MM was a joke of a lineup. So basically I'm looking for some new people to HEAR! I'm looking for something new and fresh in a lineup while retaining enough to pull the mainstays. All I see right now is mainstays and I'm yawning.

5) What do I expect: I wish EDC would be groundbreaking something more like Sensation or what used to be Trance Energy, and is now just Energy. I don't expect them too, so I'm holding out to find out more info. As I said, if I don't get a ticket and don't go, so be it. Vegas has plenty of alternatives to go do.

What I fear: a severely less diverse lineup when compared to last year which cost me less money is coming. Seeing as the top three headliners are all similar now, that's a big pole in the tent. That's all I've got to go on right now. Armin's pretty much out, as are Above & Beyond. Their schedules just don't lend them to being there. In fact, most of what we've heard as avoided the two big label groups (Armada and Anjunabeats) while not even remotely stretching out to perhaps less known but still influential label groups (HCR and Spinning are examples.)

No offense to him as a person, but his success already has. I do not understand what the draw is of "music" like his. Then again, I'm a melody guy myself.

His stuff is ridiculously melodic, especially for a dubstep guy. It's not my bag but guys like him and Nero seem to be all about the Plurstep.

Seconded. I'll give that at best it is a convoluted mess of melodies slammed into one another.

I'm referencing the "dubstep" he makes, not the electro tracks. Scary Monsters is not melodic imo at all. Maybe I should be more specific in saying I expect melody and harmony in my music. Dubstep rarely has either. It's very two step breakbeat similar to Hip Hop / Top 40 and features a continuous "epic drops," which is why the kids love it. None of that grabs me.

I don't want to be defending Skrillex too much here so I'll just say that I never said they were good melodies, but that they're definitely a major focus of his tracks. Compare his output to stuff by Skream or even Rusko and the differences are pretty glaring.

Edit: didn't see your edit before I wrote this. I don't know what you consider the synth lead or vocal sample to be doing in "Scary Monsters" but in any other genre that would be called a melody.

Different conversation and I'd rather not thread-hijack so I'll drop it here with this. The fact that you and I disagree on what melody is and its purpose in a track will remain. To each their own.

Regardless, dubstep, imo, is a bull genre that people got carried away with because the press ed up years back on Drum & Bass. Most dubstep tracks are simply extensions of DnB (Nero's "Me & You" is a perfect example of this.) DnB had been producing what the media labels as dubstep for years. What dubstep today tends to focus heavily on, and Monsters is no different, is what used the be the drop in a DnB track years back. Now, with the sole focus on the drop, track's are made where they pretty much just recycle that drop over and over, never evolving the melodies and often causing dissonant structures. The synth line you call out is a melody yes, I grant you that. For a track to be melodic to me, it has to carry an evolving melody in harmony with the production. Monsters' synth line does not do this to me. It is an overarching electro line that doesn't fit at all melodically in the overall production. That's my opinion though. You can enjoy the genre I don't.

The one thing I don't get about this is how most LA people are so excited about EDC being in Vegas. So now they have to drive 5 hours and pay for a hotel instead of just going to DTLA, and this is a good thing?

It's not like they're actually going to be enjoying the Vegas strip nightlife at all, because they'll be at the festival all weekend.

As for the initial lineup, the reason I (and I assume others) are a bit put off by it, is there is no trance headliner yet. Tiesto, Guetta, and SHM all play a similar style of music, and none of it is trance. Even if you're not a trance fan, you have to admit that all three of those headliners are very similar.

Last year at EDC, Friday seemed like "House Night" and Saturday seemed like "Trance Night". This year there are 3 days, and so far no trance.

As for dubstep, I like it. I believe there should be a dubstep stage at the event. The biggest issue I have with it is the crowd. The west coast dubstep crowd is pretty awful, to put it lightly.
