Problem with both police and protesters is that there are bad eggs in both parties. Cops with a bias, a chip on their shoulder, can and do act in extreme ways especially when tormented, taunted, etc - and the herd mentality often follows. Police should keep their cool and treat people fairly, and protesters should stop breaking windows and lighting on fire....but there will always be a few that give their own side a bad rep.

Me personally, while I believe peaceful protesting is a democratic right we all share, you'd be naive to think there was no risk of being detained unfairly or inhumanely in a highly charged situation like the G20. It's not fair, it's not just, but that's reality and I would have to feel pretty damn strongly about something to put myself in the middle of the action.

What about those that aren't willingly put into that situation? (w what I was saying earlier?)

They shouldn't have thrown the damned thing here to begin with, bleh...makes everything ed up.

People are trying to simplify things and especially with this there is no black and white IMO.

so, those unequipped and untrained are responsible for maintaining order of those intent on disrupting it? I don't see how that could end badly.

Worse, do you really think police are going to take the time and sort out who's responsible if they come across two guys fighting each other in the midst of a riot?

Hell, they don't even do that when it's not a riot, they just throw both of them in jail anyway.

Like I said in my earlier post, it didn't stop protesters in Vancouver from preventing most black bloc activity. Police didn't arrest a single person in Vancouver for disrupting a black bloc action. That protesters in Toronto won't do it, smacks of nil integrity.

I agree with this completely.

Yeah, sorry - haven't been following the last 20 or so odd pages of convo.

Canada had to host the summit. Each country takes turns. There are very few cities in Canada that can accommodate the G20. For example, the Americans here for it totalled close to 1000 people and took over the entire royal york hotel. That's only 1 country. I think people should quit bitching that it was here in Toronto...whoopdeefack. That's kind of a non issue at this point.

this thread is crazy for all these agreements we are having :p

re: article posted - um, I'm sorry she had a gas mask with her? right, and she "says" she was on her way to protest "peacefully"
well, who in the right mind would say "I was on my way to smash windows and call cops pigs"?

I'm not liking this "she said, he said" - who knows what were really their intentions

and Jay, quit with this USSR/Korea/China crap - I was in project mode when that was going around so how the hell would I know and how is this relevent to my views now?

It would be such a big celebration it'd probably get shut down by police

your post came in as I was writing, so I only saw it after the face. But regardless, for the 'ideal' outcome that might have been in that particular case, one doesn't have to look far to see the 'less than ideal'.

exraver
2009 G-20 London security cost £7.2 million.
2009 G-20 Pittsburgh security cost $30 million.
2010 G-20 Toronto security cost $ 930 million.

Considering what happened in last 2 days, CANADA=FAIL

Sorry I meant to say in the downtown core, they should've thrown it in the CNE like the mayor suggested...

Also AJ, I read an article of a security guard (not one for the G20 but a 'regular one') trying to stop a protester from smashing and he got surrounded entirely and had to retrat...
