worth and what you will get are 2 different things.

name me a team desperate enough to overpay for him, what you think they would give up...and that is assuming they are on the list of the 10 teams that kaberle would go to.

i read an article on slam that kaberle said the list was the same as last year and that your bobo head gm has not asked him about it again.

that kind of thing limits you guys from getting what you believe you could.

also 4.25 million for a defensemen than would not be a top pair guy on a contender.

you'll see the deadline is almost here. (well the olympic freeze, but considering that gms have 2 days after the olympics before the deadline i expect many deals will be done before the vancouver games.)

the link to the article (which does not make it true i know).

how many times has kaberle been "almost traded" by now, and how many times has it happened? ;)

If Kaberle does get traded...and I don't think he will....he is going to go to a top 5 team. None of those teams are going to give up a first or second line player for Kaberle....they will give up picks and prospects. So if Toronto is lucky they will get a prospect and the 25-30 pick in the first round....which isn't much. Burke would be better off waiting till the off season and trade Kaberle then....when Kaberle doesn't have a no trade clause.

The only really players that Burke has to trade are Hagman, Stajan and Poni. None of those players are going to get you anything higher then a second round pick or third round pick.

The only thing Toronto Fans can do is accept that Toronto will be a bottom 5 team for the next 5 years and hope Burke can get some decent free agents over the next few years. The problem is any decent free agent wants long term security. Unless you are willing to sign a player for 8-10 years the player will not be interested. Burke has never signed anyone for more then a 5 year contract and I don't think he ever will. Kolvachuk (sp??) is a free agent this summer and Burke has already said that he wouldn't even consider signing him to a contract that he is looking for (10 years for 8.5 mill a season).

and there lies the other problem of trading kaberle at the moment, do you think burke would be willing to take some high salaried flop back in return? It would be almost essential for any trade to happen...and it is somewhat why you see rumours about boston wanting kaberle if the leafs can take Tim Thomas and his brutal contract off of their hands.

i've seen that one floating around quite a bit involving thomas and one of the first rounders the leafs gave up coming back (not theirs obviously as the bruins would not give up a possible top 5 pick that the leafs 1st rounder that they got will very likely be)

The leafs are already up against cap space come next year. Assuming the leafs resign Ian White and Jonas Gustavsson and no one else...they will have approximately 1.9 mill per player to spend on 9 spots. That doesn't leave much room for making the team better...all you are going to get is average players...at best for that money.
Schadenfreude
yikes!

i did not think that their hands where tied that much...the same can be said for us, we are up to the cap and mediocre, while a team like nashville (whom both the habs and leafs give tons of money to via revenue sharing) is way below and pocketing our money and being highly competitve.

In big markets like Mtl and TO you simply have to over pay talent to play there...because they could easily go somewhere else to collect millions without any media pressure.

Even if gomez has a ghastly contract...he is actually playing quite well. Bergeron was a nice pick up for the dough, Camillieri a steal and Gionta is good when he is not hurt.

so far Gainey pulling Pouilot is the best move he has done. (even if latendresse is killing it for the wild)

now if only we could get rid of Spacek, Gill, and Mara we could build a better team without those useless contracts at ridiculous prices.

Does anyone else find what's going on in Edmonton comical yet familiar?

Perhaps now people will accept the fact that Quinn can't in coach.
Schadenfreude
it is funny, but not familiar to the leafs because finances are a problem in edmonton. Both teams are mismanaged, but one can afford to be so more than the other.
Schadenfreude
hey chem i'll give you a first round pick if you take price and buy me a beaver tail:p

Actually, Emdonton is just as ed, if not moreso, than the Leafs when it comes to cap space and crippling contracts.

Schadenfreude
yes but the oilers don't have deep pockets like the leafs making every year they lose playoff revenue much more disastrous.

the oilers are way more ed than the leafs.;)

Edmonton has more players they can trade away then Toronto....at least they can get some decent returns on players...Toronto has players that other teams will take because they lost out on other chances.
