I agree....he is an over rated player. Take a look at Ottawa....they have three players that you could easily say are in the top 25 players in the NHL....Toronto....hmmmmm........maybe Sundin gets number 25 but that would be pushing it.

Isn't Chris Chelios still on the Red Wings?

his Grandchildren will retire before he does.

Because he's one of the TOP players in the league. That's why he captains the Leafs, the All Star team and team Sweden which he led to a gold medal. He's surrounded by donkeys in Toronto, which is the reason why the boys in blue have a difficulty advancing in the playoffs. :whip:

after sepnding 19 mil on our defence we are still have many holes to feel in our backend. What ever hapend to Peter Bondra? He was in TO for physical test and was agree to sign for league minimum. Leafs really need to pull up another trade in the next few weeks for a winger for Mats.

Sundin isn't even a top 25 player in the NHL....maybe not even a top 50 player. He is way past his prime years and he has done nothing for Toronto......by nothing I mean lead us to a Stanley Cup......I could care less if Toronto makes the playoffs or not....if they don't win the cup its a loosing season....heck I would venture to say toronto should finish dead last the next 4 years so they can actually start to build a team and then go for the cup...the way toronto does things now....I will never see a cup parade in Toronto....unless Ottawa decised to be real pricks and hold their stanley cup parade along Yonge Street.

That's a bit harsh on Sundin. I think he did his best for the Leafs. One player does not make or break the team. It's just Leafs failed to put in that extra bit that would have carried them over to the Cup, but I don't think it's Sundin's fault. (Though Gilmour may be better captain than Sundin)

A bit too high of an expectation I think

Sundin is still not a top 50 player in the NHL.....if a team like toronto can't secure a top 50 player then there is something seriously wrong with either a) ownership b) the teams rep amongst other players c) captain's ability to lead

It probably is a high expectation but nonetheless there is only one winner and why should the fans of any team expect nothing but winning. That doesn't mean I won't watch every game and I won't cheer for them but I can't say a season is truly a success unless they win the cup....they may make improvements from year to year but that still doesn't mean it was a successful year.

the truth is MLSE couldn't care less if they win a cup because they sell the place out every game anyway. Hell, they don't even care about hockey! All they give a about is getting me to buy one of their condos then mortgaging it through their financial services. The Leafs will continue to barely make the playoffs or miss then all together until such time as a) someone buys them who actually wants the prestige of a winning team, or b) Torontonians smarten up and stop going to games or buying merchandise until such time as the Leafs put forward a truelly competative team.

In the old NHL I would agree with you....with the Salary Cap the money issue is taken out because they are limited to what they can spend and they have already shown that they will spend the max available.

The maple leafs and any other hockey team in the NHL makes a great deal of its revenue through sales of playoff tickets. Prices are higher, and the more games you play, the more money you will make. So, it is in the best interest (financially) of every team to go as far as you can.

Prior to the salary cap, Toronto was only behind the Rangers for highest payroll, and even now, theyre spending the maximum.

Dont be naive, the Leafs want to win a championship, its just not the only facet of the business for them.

The cap only applies to players, there are other considerations to be made when making a winning team. The fact that they have a moron for a GM speaks volumes about their commitment to victory.
