Go for the by-out.. collect that money and then sign somewhere else where he can make extra cash on top of what he would already get. Even with the cap increasing to 56.7mil this year, he's still not worth what he's getting.
Although I agree with you...remember...both the NHLPA and the Owners agreed to this in the collective barganing agreement. I don't blame him for wanting to cash out.....the team wants him to waive his no trade clause. This was negotiated into the contract in good faith and he has every right to enforce it.
Would you give up Millions of Dollars and give up your rights just to make someone happy who doesn't even want you?

I have a feeling Sundin is going to retire....although I don't know how you leave a 20 mill over 2 year deal on the table like that.

there must be something in the works or they have told McCabe not to even bother showing up until he waives his no trade clause.

Sundin has stated he will not be making a decision any time soon...he still needs to figure out if he wants to play.
I think he is setting it up so that he can join a team part way through the season...one that he feels will win the cup.

it can also bite him in the ass if he waits too long. teams have caps and if they spend it on other players, they'll have less to spend on him. it would be crazy if anyone went more than vancouvers offer.

if Sundin does go to a team with a Stanley Cup chance halfway through the season...I am sure he would sign for less just for the chance at getting a cup....even if he signs for 7 mill a year...by the halfway mark the team is only on the hook for 3.5 mill...which alot of teams will keep space for deadline trades and signings.

2017...you probably are not too far off on that...Toronto hasn't had a rebuilding phase in over 20 years.

Leafs Acquire Grabovski From Canadiens Toronto Maple Leafs Jul 3, 2008, 12:25 PM EDT Cliff Fletcher, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Thursday that the hockey club has obtained centreman Mikhail Grabovski (pronounced ‘gra BAWV-skee’) from the Montreal Canadiens. In exchange, the Canadiens will receive the rights to Greg Pateryn (selected in the 5th round of the 2008 Entry Draft) and Toronto’s second-round draft selection in 2010.
“Mikhail had tremendous success at the most recent World Hockey Championships,” said Fletcher. “He has great upside and we will look for him to contribute for us right away at the centre position.”
Grabovski, 24, scored three goals and added six assists in 24 games for Montreal in 2007-08. He recorded his first NHL goal against Boston’s Manny Fernandez on October 22 at the Bell Centre. He missed 25 games due to an ankle injury this past season. Upon his return from the injury, he recorded 20 points in 12 games with the Hamilton Bulldogs. His efforts earned him AHL Player of the Week honours for the period ending February 17. He was named first star in five consecutive AHL games from February 15 to February 20 at which point he was recalled to Montreal for the remainder of the season.
The native of Potsdam, East Germany was originally Montreal’s fourth choice, 150th overall, in 2004.
Now we are picking up Montreal's garbage.....just what Toronto needs....another third line centre.
