And I have taken back my statement that I had made during the week that I had the V700DJ's (I thought I liked them at that time - what a candy-@$$ f*ck tart trash craptacularist I was!!) Now, I knew they weren't meant to be. (Sure, they'd be OK for experienced, well-seasoned DJ's - but they're less than ideal for music listening of any sort whatsoever.)

And as I said, the V500DJ and the V600 are worse than the V700DJ. (Verminator, you said in another thread that you own a pair of the V700DJ. Go on, you can continue using those V700DJ's - at least until the flimsy plastic joints above the earcups start to crack. :p)

*notices the silence as everyone sees the v700's on my head as I enter the thread*

Yes, I own a pair of Sony MDR-V700DJs, have had them for a few months now (three and a half, to be exact).

I won't get into details as how I got them, why, who I spoke to, asked for opinions, blah blah. It would just stretch out this post unnecessarily.

Now, music is one of my greatest passions, and the medium through which this passion is attained is a very serious matter to me. I.e. it really does matter what headphones I use! Not only in terms of sound quality, but also in terms of comfort.

On that note, I have to say that I use my v700's a lot. And I mean a helluva LOT. It's the only way through which I can listen to music. Not counting T.V., I use the v700's for everything else. Even my computer - I don't use speakers as I don't want to disturb anyone else. And I even have the PS2 hooked up to the comp, so I use the v700's for videogaming as well. I use them in the car (except when driving), when in the bus, in the subway, when walking down the street, when doing work, etc. (and while mixing) So I would say that I have "experience" with these cans.

And let me tell you one thing, wearing the v700's for a long time gets *painful* (for me). First of all, they're not really "circum-aural" since the cups don't really go around your ears. They rather go on top of them. When wearing these cans for an extended period of time, my ears get hot, sweaty and painful. This is because the cups press against the ear quite a bit, creating a not so comfortable feeling. It wouldn't be that bad if my head wasn't so large (or if I didn't have to use the cans for so long). I have to extend the headphones to notch "6", which is 3 notches down from "MAX", in order for them to fit properly on my head, which explains the pressure on my ears. Not only that, but because these are heavy headphones, I experience discomfort on the top of my head as the 'phones press down.

As far as sound quality is concerned, I have certainly witnessed various views. I won't get into that either, most of you know them anyway. I'll just say that for beatmatching, they're not bad. Sometimes (while using Traktor) I inexplicably get a slight double beat when it seemed like the beats were matched before EQ'ing/fading, but I give the benefit of the doubt here and attribute this error to a lack of experience rather than any fault on the part of the headphones.

On the other hand, while playing Counter-strike on de_train, I could have sworn I heard a fly buzzing around my head. I soon realized, though, that there would be no way to hear the bugger with the headphones on, as they would block it out. I guess my subconscious somehow rationalized that the fly then must then be between the cup and my ear, so I got a little startled. Turns out, however, that it was just a fly buzzing around the dumpster within de_train (at the back near the T spawn, if anyone plays CS). The v700's rendered the buzzing so nicely that for a second I thought it was real.

I do notice, however, that the bass is exaggerated, and after a few months of it, the novelty has passed, and music is beginning to sound a little muffled. Particularly voices and (to a lesser degree) classical instruments. Not to mention the bass from beats having a tendency to slightly wash out other parts of the track, like the melody.

SO, what was the point of all this? Just to establish that v700's aren't necessarily evil (but not the greatest) and that the discomfort they provide me (coupled with the inaccuracy of the sound), has led me to considering getting other headphones (even thought the v700's win the beauty contest IMHO).

The 2 contenders for new 'phones (for me) would be the Sennheiser HD-280's, and the Sony MDR-7506 (or V-6). I'm not too sure about the Sennheiser's as they look *huge* in the pics that I've seen of them (I haven't seen one in person as no store that I have visited carry them), and I wouldn't particularly like to be wearing huge cans on the bus.

Basic criteria: great, accurate sound; durability and ruggedness; and COMFORT (if nothing else, they must be comfortable!! )

Now, I've heard mixed reports about the 7506/V6. Some people say that they are the same headphones (other than the gold plug on the 7506), while others say that they are different internally (with the 7506 being better sounding, and therefore more expensive). I've also read different opinions on the comfort. Some people say they are comfortable, while others disagree (I guess the latter have large heads! :toothless: in which case these cans would feel uncomfortable for me as well).

Any insights on this? Thanks in advance.

Well, alccode, the Sennheiser HD 280 PRO's look big in the picture - but are actually mid-sized, and mid-weight. In fact, they are on the smallish side for those headphones that have pads that truly go around the ear.

LOL that was a whole lot indeed. Thanks again for the time. Yeah, I'll figure it all out soon enough. The decision will be made when my friend gets his V6's in a week or a week and a half. I will try those out then. :)

(Hehehe and thanks Gluegun for helping me rediscover a lot of old, dusty equipment in my house that sounds far, far better than newer equipment.)

Thanks for the info, ShadySlim. The problem with the pictures was that I had nothing to compare them to (even the ones with the 'phones on a dummy's head - I couldn't exactly judge how large that head was supposed to be). :D

You are in Australia. Availability is extremely limited. If your budget is tight, look for the "Sony MDR-V6" or "Sony MDR-7506". You should be able to find the MDR-7506 locally at pro dealerships, and the V6 you can import from the U.S. Check shopping.yahoo.com for inexpensive U.S. prices.

Also, many places ship the HD280 Pro's internationally. The most reliable dealer for the HD280 Pro's, who also ship worldwide, is www.headphone.com

They have them for $100 USD before shipping and taxes. With your shipping and tax costs, that is going to be a LOT of AUD. Also, for cheaper dealers, check out the prices at shopping.yahoo.com as well. They are around $84 USD there, and some of the dealers may ship internationally as well.

Hey,

Ok, the difference between the Sony MDR-7506 & The Silver Ones (Forget the name) are diffrent how? Which is better? I took a listened to both of them the other day and saw that the Silver ones had much more bass & sound quality compared to the 7506's and the price difference isnt much (about $20 difference). Of coarse the silver ones have the swivel feature also, but besides that. Please let me know what you see different between both and which one you would go with. Thanks
