Nice thread, full of nice info :)

I need new headphones sometime, my Sony 500's broke (yeah, the hinges), so I'm looking for something mid-range, what do you guys recommend out of these?

Sennheiser HD25sp - £59
Sennheiser HD-280 - £79
Pioneer SE-DJ5000 - £79

I don't wanna spend more than £80 really, broke teenager here ;)

After having spent about 2 hours reading through the entire thread Im still having a couple of question for u my precious Gluegun ;)

First of all: I want to order my headphones at this site (Im dutch):
http://www.new-line.nl/webshop/list.asp?c=20&p=1

Now, as u can see there's also a Sony MDR-V900 on there. Ive never seen this one get mentioned in the entire thread. Ive only seen that the V500 and V600 (like also on the site I just gave u) are crappy. But how is this V900? Its bloody expensive anyway...

Second question: I still dont really know for sure what u prefer, a Sennheiser HD 280 or a Sennheiser HD 25? Could u also consider the price difference between them of 80 euros and advice me which one u would get? I use them for bedroom-djing and listening to music, so they dont have to be very bass-heavy.

Thx for the help!

I'm not an expert on the MDR-V900 but I do know they are crappy and/or not worth getting considering the price. As far as DJ's are concerned, the only Sony cans they should be considering are the MDR-V6! (IMHO)

I own a Sennheiser HD280 and the only fault I find with them is that they are slightly too big/bulky, so if you plan on using these outside, trust me, don't, you will look silly.

Secondly, although the plastic is pretty durable it may crack -- the headband has cracked for me on the right side. You can stop this from happening by extending the headbands enough so that there is minimal pressure in the headband. For me, this means extending them to the absolute maximum. ;)

However, the sound is very good and they have a flatter overall feel than the V6's. The V6's have very good bass, and the highs are slightly harsher. Also the midrange is a *tad* *tad* bloatey. They are still excellent phones and for me, it is much more fun to listen to music with the V6's rather than the HD280's. Keeping that in mind, the Sennheiser's are more comfortable and block out more sound. If you are using them at home, like you said, they will be PERFECT. Sometimes I totally forget I have them on; the cups encircle your ears perfectly so you don't get "ear fatigue" due to the cups pressing down on them (like on the V6 or V700DJ or any supra-aural headphone).

As for the HD 25, I am not personally acquainted with it but I have heard very good things about it.

Good luck!

More reviews...
I headed down to the audio store in need of some headphones for Djing, since my Sony MDR-V700DJ's swivel finally broke off completely (it was only a matter of time).
Keep in mind that I also have the MDR-7506, but I dont find them good enough for djing in loud environments (and it proved me so at a recent gig i had)
Now back to what I ended up getting.
I ended up at my local audio store finding the Pioneer HDJ100s and the Technics 1200s orginal black ones.
I ended getting the Pioneer HDJ1000s and tested out those babies for two days and returned the headphones and ended up getting the original Technics RP-DJ1200 (black). Keep in mind that I previously reviewed a Technics RP-DJ1200 silver finish and I was not satisfied with the sound (not enough bass).
Now back to the Pioneer review for those who are interested:
Pioneers sound kinda similar to the MDR-V700.. a bit muffled at lower volums due to the amount of bass, and the bass seems to be a bit superficial, boomy. Now, i have nothing against boomy bass, as long as it stands out when spinning under loud monitors. However, i had some difficulty adjusting to the Pioneers, and I dont know why. It seems like the cup on the phones are as big as the MDR-V700DJ, but the actual hole for the monitor is small and deep, to add a boom effect when the headphones are on. However, when using one ear monitoring, with the phone a bit away from the ear and on the shoulder, it was difficult to hear the bass... Funny enough, i never had any issues with monitoring using the MDR-V700s, as they provided well for djing, specifically one ear monitoring. In addition, it felt like at certain times, the volume was not even on both sides, if i used them for listening. It may have seemed like the left side was a bit louder. I made sure that the 1/4 jack was screwed tight, so that wasnt an issue. Now, it did have the mono/stereo switch to use when monitoring, but that still didnt really allow me to mix accurately.
In stereo mode, i felt the headphones had way too much of a stereo space effect... very artificial sounding. They were overall comfortable and power handling was not an issue... it just seemed to not have the type of sound that I wanted for monitoring.. but that is just me. They seemed they can work fine with both phones on, as they have more of a boom boom effect, due to the deep hole design cup.
Also.... I thought that maybe they werent burned in or whatever, so I left them playing on a source for 48hrs, but that did not make a difference.
Either way, I did not think they were worth the money, so I returned and realized from my first trip there that that store had gotten the black Technics RP-DJ1200, original black finish, which is said to have a bassier sound than the silver ones. I purchased them and tested them out since, and they are great. These are the best phones Ive had... no compaints here.
First, the sound is very good. Bass is tight, snappy and deep without sacrifice of other frequencies. Also, they go very loud, without a problem and seem to be efficient (work well with different amps and sources). Secondly, very light and comfortable. Also, they swivel nicely and dont seem to be in stressed when using the swivels, because they do not rotate side by side, but diagnal (hard to explain). They seem very simple and not complex, in terms of the built, which seems like they can last a long time with proper use.
One thing i did not like about the Pioneers HDJ1000 is that the construction seemed very similar to the MDR-V700. Same type of plastic used, a bit different hinge design, but they certainly seem very delicate as they have many pretty parts and uncessary plastic accessory pieces.
No offense to those who own Pioneer HDJ1000, as this was my personal opinion off 2-3 days use.
Other headphones ive owned are the Koss TD-80, Sony MDR-V700DJ, Sony MDR-7506, Sony (cant remember model, but only $30)

Okay- long thread- this is all in my opinion as a professional dj.Im in a good position in that i have used a lot of different types of headphones in lots of different venues and settings.

The most important thing is that headphones suit you- you are comfortable with them, and they sound right to you. F*ck someone elses opinion ( as shown by all the slating of the sony 700s on this thread). Its what you personally get on with that matters.

Cheap pairs are fine if you are only spinning in your room and the occasional house party- but when you start playing out in clubs, invest in some proper phones
All the pairs that follow are professional standard headphones and you wont go wrong with any of them to be honest- just try them out and find the best pair for you.

I have a pair of the Sony MDR-V700DJ's , and i use them night in night out- up to 5 nights a week for 4 hours at a a time.
i am very happy with them, in terms of sound, clarity, volume and comfort.
the longevity concerns me, as i have seen plenty of pairs crack- but if they last a year before cracking, then thats ok as far as i am concerned- considering the number of hours of use i will have had out of them.

Sennhesisers-only ones worth considering are the HD 25 (NOT hd 25SP-these are poor in comparison to the normal 25 and not very confortable or easy to use or stop from swivelling)But as with most sennheisers, they tend to break fast.
i personally dont get on with the sound of sennheisers any more- i tend to get more ear tiredness and fatigue from using them than any other- used the HD 25s for a long while but now i use the sonys
As for the hd280s, really designed for studio monitoring- as reflected in their bulk-not particuarly comfortable either.

Technics RP-DJ1210- sound is very very impressive- but the cups dont fit over your ears- they are just too small, meaning not as isolated. Could be got used to- but i just didnt get on with them and found them a bit uncomfortable.Just a personal thing-maybe i have big ears, altho fellow djs have mentioned the same thing about the smaller cups to me too.

Pioneer 1000s- not tried these yet- may invest in a pair shortly, as they look (in style and specs ) similar to the sonys.

I have used others, but not going to list them all- and to be honest the ones listed above are the highlights

Actually, my favourite pair is a pair of sonys that are something like 25 years old (slightly older than me!) and still sound better than anything else i have ever used for clarity and sound separation, and are in my car as my backup pair permanently. Would use them all the time, but just too bulky, and of great sentimental value- and impossible to replace due to their age.

I checked out the Sony MDRV500 and MDRv700 in a store (F. Shop). The pad is not big enough to surround the ear, especialy the 500. These are supra-aural designs (pad sits on the ear), rather than circumnaural like the Sennheiser HD-280, so it probably does not block the house sound very well, and I'd think the ears would feel squished after a while.

I know the MDRV500DJ gets bad comments on this thread so I wasn't going to buy them, but interesting to check the designs. The Sony 700 and 7506 are also candidates, possibly might be better for a full-time DJ. I'm just a home DJ but dreaming of much noisier venues. ***UPDATE*** I've now ordered the Senn HD 280's, will post comments when they're broken in.

Don't recall if anyone has posted these links to HD-280 DJ reviews:

I'm with you on this Freak.
I also DJ in a proffesional capacity and put in about as much time as yourself. I have played in places all round Europe and just love the fact that this is actually my job.

This is why I find this thread to be a touch annoying as you have the opinions of one person dictating to others the choice of headphones they should be buying. What makes this thread even more laughable is the following quote.

Gluegun from page 1.
quote:
I can only offer advice, and knowledge--knowledge that is ultimately not based off of personal experience in the "DJ" realm, I am sad to say.

Gluegun, I will hand it to you, you know a lot about the technical specifications of headphones and I would gladly take your advice if I were looking for headphones for something other than DJing.
When you play in a club the sound changes considerably and regular headphone rules don't apply. They become a tool rather than a source of listening pleasure.

I use the Sony MDR-V700 and as Freak stated the only issue I have with them is their lifespan.
I find them very comfortable (I know not all people do) .

Many top name DJs use the Sony 700s. Pete Tong, The Plump DJs, Jon O'Bir, Mauro Picotto, Matt Darey, M.I.K.E. and so on.

Paul Oakenfold uses Sony CD550s.

Judge Jules and a ton of other DJs use Sennhieser (Never sure of that spelling).
I personally don't like the Sennheiser HD 25s but not for any technical reason just my own choice.

The bottom line is that all you have to do is look around and see what the big names are using. They know the business and their livelyhood depends on it. They would not use these headphones if they were bad (And most are not being paid to do so).
Try out a few different brands see what you like and make up your own mind.

Cheers

hmm I think I'm going to get a pair of HD280s. This 32 of attenuation is very very attractive as I mix in my headphones. :)
