My Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones are cracking. Wondering if anyone else has this problem with their 280's?

I've had the HD 280's for about 7 months and after 2 months they were cracking quite a bit at the ends of the main headband piece as shown in the image. They weren't falling apart but it looked like it was just a matter of time before the main band actually broke. They have a 2 year warranty so I got them fixed free by Sennheiser Canada. I bought the phones in the USA but Senn Canada had no problem fixing them under warranty.

They seemed solid when I got them back 2 months ago, but now I see they are again cracking at the same places. I'm surprised considering it's "pro" gear. I know some Sony phones have a similar problem. I'm very careful with the 280s and use them about 10 hours a week on average.

Aside from the cracking, these are good headphones, designed to be used for studio monitoring and DJing, flat response, but not artificially bass-heavy like some Sony DJ headphones.

Wow i use these phones everyday for the last 5 months but no cracks yet.

Edit: Well i looked alot closer and found 2 minor cracks near the leather cushion. That just pissed me off@!!

I posted this on another board and a few people have also had the same HD280 cracking problem so it seems to be a design defect - the plastic is not thick enough or strong enough or they need to change something.

I hope they change the design, or something, before my warranty expires next year. :nervous:

If I was using these several hours per day and constantly moving them on and off my head and adjusting them (I mix "in the 'phones"), they'd probably have needed more repairs by now.

The ever ongoing cracking catastrophe with new dj headphones.. that sucks big a$$.

Another one added to the list, the HD280

so far, here is the list of headphones addicted to crack:

1. Sony MDRV-700
2. Pioneer HDJ-1000 (some cases snapping in pieces)
3. Sennheiser HD280 Pro

(ive also ready one person mentioning their ISOS 1001DJ headphones cracking on head band area, but only seen once,, so cant add them to the list yet)

Im telling you, companies nowadays are just taking every shortcut possible in means of lowering manufacturing cost...

WHy cant they just stick to old school big hunk of metal headphones like the old days..

You can. Get the headphone that hasn't changed in design since the 80's, the Sony MDR-V6.

Yes, i have those, actually the mdr 7506, but same thing. BUt yeah i do give full credit to sony on that model, cause i use em a lot and no signs of cracking or breaking. I certainly feel they are worth every penny.

But im talking about dj headphones.. ei, some of the ones mentioned above and the usual suspects... i know 7506s can work as dj headphones, but some like myself, disagree and think they are better as studio phones and for listening... but not gonna turn this to another what is a dj headphone thread.

Those Sond MDV or some like that are good ones

Here is a pict of my 280's with the bluetack mod that was mentioned in this thread half installed.

I think you only have to cover the inner circle with the putty. At least thats whut I did. Let me know how it sounds.

It sounds great. In the thread i read it said to use the bluetack in both. The mod does really calm down the brightness and helps bring the base out more.
