Gluegun -
I spent today reading the latest 15 pages of this thread, and I'm slightly less confused about what to buy than I was previously. Here are my thoughts:
Sennheisers seem to be the most desirable for sound quality in my price range. But other than sound quality, I need them to be comfortable headphones for DJing with. They don't have to be suited to a club environment at this point so don't worry about that... but I want to learn to DJ with quality headphones (tight bass in particular) at home. The HD25 (not the SP) is described by Sennheiser as Studio Headphones, will this mean they are really uncomfortable for DJing? What are the pros and cons of the HD25 as compared to the HD280 Pro's?
People in general seem to consider most of the Sony headphones very comfortable and DJ friendly, which I'd like very much... but if they don't have tight bass or good sound in general I want nothing to do with them.
What do the AKG's have to offer? Not that it's a major issue but cosmetically, they look house.
Thanks in advance mate! |

Are you in Australia or the States? Also exactly what environment other than a club will you use them in? What will you hook them up to? Do you need headphones that swivel a lot? Extra folding capabilities? Would you want a set of more "normal" headphones that you can also mix with -- albeit not in a club environment? Any good headphone will be good to mix with if all you are doing is bedroom mixing... where else might you use these headphones? What is your projected budget? |

GG - I'm living in the states atm mate. Yes I'm starting out as a bedroom DJ but I would prefer getting used to a DJ style headphone, which is why I'm not sure about the HD25 (which, from other people's opinions sound really good except for the fact they aren't specifically "DJ headphones"). I have a Xone32 that will be powering them... the user manual of which recommends a 70ohm load, but handles anything from 30 to 600. Regarding the swiveling, I guess that takes us back to the DJ headphone dilemma... like I said I'd like to get used to a dj style headphone that does swivel (although I'm not experienced enough to know just what kind of swiveling would work best for me), but if you highly recommend a more studio oriented pair of headphones like the HD25 then I'll probably lean towards that. My budget will be ideally about USD$150, but I'm flexible.
Thnx mate :)
EDIT: I forgot to add in that comfort is a major factor too... please give me your thoughts on the comfort of any cans you might recommend |

About the HD25 - these have clear, beautiful flat sound. I've been using them for 11 months now and i know them well.
These are very good headphones, they have a nice swivel, but i have two major complaints, and that's the reason i'm searching for new headphones:
1- The cord only has 1.5 meter and it is a regular one (not a spiral one). You can buy a replacement with 3 meters, but it's still not a spiral one, which means it gets in the way too often.
2- If you have big ears, like me, they're EXTREMELY unconfortable. In the first months they clamp your ears a lot, then they become loose, but the cups are still way to small for me.
These are the only two complaints about them. Despite this, these headphones have some very good things:
1- replaceable parts - all parts are replaceable and cheap, so they will last a lifetime
2- very lightweight, you almost don't feel them in the head.
Bottom line, if you don't have big ears and don't mind about the cable, they're top-of-the-line.
For me they just don't cut it, because of what i've mentioned above. |

Thanks for the info borron :) I wouldn't consider my ears bigger than average so I don't think that will be a problem, however I would much prefer a coiled cable, I wonder if it's at all possible to get one for these headphones...
Regarding the swivel, could you describe it at all? Which way they swivel, what you can't do with them? Cheers |

No, you can't get coiled cables for HD25. If you don't have a problem with their small size, you can get velour pads for them.
They swivel up and down, nothing special. The cups rotate 360º. The headband is double, but using it separately is (and looks) stupid. |

When i first bought the HD280's, the sound quality sounded really flat in other words, very little bass. However, this changes over time. Burining them in really does make a difference. The bass is not overpowering instead it is sharp and clear. Regarding the swivelling: They do swivel a bit and you can have one ear covered while the other is listening to the live sound. Comfort is not a problem with these.
Beatmatching with highhats definitely has its uses. But i'm usually lazy and just match the drum beats. Beatmatching with high hats doesn't necessarily seem easier at first but I bet it gets alot easier over time. Regarding the accuracy, i haven't had enough experience yet to really tell how beatmatching with high affects affects accuracy. And gluegun you are right, it defeinitely takes a lot of stress of your ears. I found that my friend's v700's were killing my ears due to its loud volume. It seemed like the bass was way to overwhelming on those cans. |

I would guess that the change is simply beatmatching with a *quick*, rather than boomy sound. Also, depending on the character of the headphones (or the amount of burn-in your hd280's have...) one might be able to be heard over the other in a loud environment...? I'm not sure; this is speculation. Anyone have any more data? |

| Beatmatching with hihats comes with time, and it's very useful, but for me it's not that accurate. I only use it when i want to beatmatch and there is no bass (on a breakdown for example). |

They are very very good 'phones for Dj use- the only problem people (myself included after several years) is the longevity of them- they crack around the joints eventually- and it is not covered under warranty..
Other than that they are highly recommened for dj use (cue gluegun slating them ;))
But i cant comment from an audiophiles perspective as im not that anal about listening to stuff at home-but for dj use yeah they are good- just dont expect them to last more than 2 years
i use them and Pioneer HDJ 1000s |
