guys i need a pair of good sounding headphones for them daily rides on the subway. I'm really considering getting the bulky DJ kind but i cannot distinguish good from bad. Some go for like $40cnd and some for over 200 and I'm curious as to whether their price difference makes that much of a music quality difference. i dont need any fancy tiesto type, just a kind that deliver good sound and are good at blocking outside sound(important). My max budget is $60cnd. any recommendations?
thanks |

That's it? Are you sure you can't increase the max budget any? ?? Like to $200 cnd? $60 CND really isn't much at all..
Uhh, Are you willing to go for the do-it-yourself modifications to produce acceptable sound? |

well i guess i can squeeze a bit more but $200 is well beyond that squeeze. Again, i dont need anything crazy, just something for the subway and the main reason i want those dj kind is because i want to be totally isoloated from sounds when a subway makes a 5m radius turn at 60km/h!!
spending over 100bucks more for a difference which is barely audiable doesn't make sense for my purpose!
and i dont think i'm gonna mod them, i haven't slightest clue on how to do that
so you dont think i can get a decent product for my price range? |

First of all, no matter what, anything I recommend WILL have an extremely audible difference. Trust me on this; I'm an expert. Secondly, you don't need a DJ style headphone; you simply need a closed, sealed style headphone that has a large amount of isolation. Thirdly, any recommendation I have will probably come with some tips on improving your source (if you wanna talk that, which I'd suggest...IM me sometime), be it cd player, mp3 player, or whatever, so the "small" differences will actually turn out to be big...
Thirdly, the best isolating headphones are generally EARPHONES. Earplug type headphones... not the earbuds that rest lightly in your ears, I mean the ones that go inside the canal. Trust me, those can be extremely comfortable, they just take a little while to get used to... but sadly, there's a large void between the "really cheap crappy" earphones and the "kickass but expensive" earphones, which is why I had hoped you might up your budget a bit.
So, after shipping, after taxes, after a potential border tax, what is your absoulute maximum budget, assuming that, as far as sound quality goes, it will be more than worth it?
Oh, as far as "modding a really cheap headphone" goes, I was talking about these...

Well, Australia isn't a good place to buy certain brands of headphones...

Check out the Ultrasones HFI-650 and the Beyerdynamic DT250-80. |
i was thinkin of gettin them shipped in.
mmm. i'm now heavily considering the beyer DT250-80s.
but i'm finding it difficult to justify the fact they are almost double the price of the sony v6s. have u listened to these two from personal experience? from what i gather. the v6s fault is that they may have really shrilly highs and not much of a mid range, where the beyers are just not as detailed in the high range frequencies. i think the beyers may probably be a lot more easy on the ears over extended periods. |

Nice one.
Don't beleive all you see in this thread. As far as DJing is concerned they are actually very good headphnones even if you have to be a little careful with the joints on them.
From a technical aspect everything that Gluegun says is spot on (Must confess that I am well impressed by your knowledge G). From personal experience however (about 16-17 years worth in the DJ business) I find that all of the finer points with headphones are lost when in a club environment and ultimately what it all comes down to is being able to hear the damn things. Not to mention that you have to wear them for 2 or 3 hours a time at least.
While the Sony 700s may not be top of the range on technical specs, they will still do a better job than most other headphones out there.
In terms of sound I would probably go for Senheiser but I find them so damn uncomfortable. And doing this 3-4 nights a week for hours on end comfort becomes an issue.
My advice (For what it's worth) would be to try the headphones before you buy them and see which ones you like in terms of comfort and sound.
I get to meet a lot of the names and while we rarely talk about headphones, it is fair to say that DJs will always check what gear the other is using. You will see a whole range of different headphones but the 700s are the most common. Norman Cook (That's Fatboy Slim) uses one of those telephone handsets instead of headphones for christ sake (Very 80s, very naff in my opinion).
If you take Glueguns advice you will surely not be disapointed, but just be aware that there is an army of DJs at all levels out there who wear 700s who will swear by them.
Judging by the look of this thread, headphones seem to be a very personal issue.:)
Best regards

Fair enough. The trouble is, the Sony V700DJ's are so uncomfortable for me, I couldn't stand wearing them for even 15 minutes at a time. They're not only heavy, but unbalanced as well: They keep sliding out of position just by nodding my head! :o |

Regardless if you ship it from out of country or buy it locally, the prices for Sony and Sennheiser headphones WILL be extremely inflated in Australia... that's just the way it is... I SERIOUSLY doubt that the 250-80's will be double the price of the V6's... try and find the V6's or 7506's in AUS and see what I mean... ;) |

| Anyone thinking of those new Bose quietcomfort 2 'phones for maybe music production or mixing?? I think they would be lush to own anyhow for listening...:toocool: |
|

| ShadySlim |
| The Bose is, simply put, very poor for the price. The active noise-cancelling circuits cannot cancel out all of the sounds that are trying to filter through the 'phones. The Quiet Comfort 2 itself doesn't swivel anywhere near enough for easy one-sided monitoring - which means that you'd be forced to mix with both earcups on (a no-no). Worst of all, its sound quality is more like a cheap $40 headphone than an expensive $300 headphone - in other words, the Bose should cost about 8 times less than it actually costs, based on the sound quality. |
