Well, what will you be plugging them into? They are notoriously hard to drive... there *are* easier to drive studio headphones out there...

whats your budget? What sort of sound are you looking for?

I was lucky that I had my sony mdr-v500s that have lasted me eons. Sound quality can't compare to the pioneers though.

Has anyone used the new Denons? These - http://www.agiprodj.com/?p=746 ? They look beefy and sick, I'm thinking of getting some.

Why don't you paste them?

Sadly thsi is true, Mine are not even 2 motnhs old, and they already got broken, I guess thats what you mean by cracking.

I used some special type of glue, and now it's more hard than before, and they don't seem to be broken again. the sound quality it's the same.

Interesting...

I don't know where the discussion in this thread is at, but interesting little tidbit:

Lifetime of my Sony MDRV700 DJ's: 2 years and running

Lifetime of my Pioneer HDJ1000's: About 3 Months

I'm absolutely meticulous about the care of my gear, the HDJ's broke on me in the middle of a gig last weekend, and I still haven't a clue why... :(

Now I'm stuck with a broke pair of phones and a -sounding pair... Time to read this thread and find out what I should be buying... :thepirate

BIG FAT THANKS TO GLUEGUN!!!

YOU ABSOLUTELY ROCK...

I finally decided on a set of Sennheiser HD280s thanks to this guy. He was so patient with a n00b like me :P.

I think the reason why they crack is because of the pressure they put on ur head to get a tight seal.

The isolation is ING INCREDIBLE!!!!

I put these on my head when i'm studying, and i can't hear ANYTHING around me. Even when the music is just soft. My ty cheap laptop sound card can power these big headphones (granted with EQ).

The bass could be deeper, but all of my research says that the reason for this is because somthing in the headphones has been attatched to the driver extra tight. There is a mod available that can make these headphones go NUTS with the bass. But I will simply just let them get better and better with time, as the driver loosens :D.

Hell, if i put on my Etymotic earplugs, and then these headphones on top. I can't hear ANYTHING at all, other than low thuds, like if i hit a desk or move something. And this is even if i'm not playing anything!!!!

ANd to mix with... absolutely INCREDIBLE. I can make it all out, and beatmatch so much more precisely than with the HD212...

I might put on DUCT TAPE, like TVMANN did, NOW, before they start to crack on me....

where exactly did u put the sticky tape mate??? was it on the sliding thing, or on the actual band in the midldle that the headphones can slide in and out of.

i think they're nice headphones too. i have a pair. they're probably close to 2 years old now and there's a slight crack on the other side. it's not really bad though, just a little chip has come off. i might go complain and see if i can get them warranty fixed, but the crack doesn't affect the headphones in any way so far at least. i might have to put some glue on them if they crack more later or won't get covered by the warranty if i go complain. we'll see. but i think my next headphones will definitely be the sony mdr-7056s. i haven't heard a bad word about them so far.

Abhay, here is the pic of my Sennheiser HD280 showing the cracks and where I put the tape. The picture is early in the life of the cracks and eventually the bottom 1/2 inch broke off where the bottom piece slides in, on both sides. They still worked but I was afraid they might just snap. I'll try to post a picture of the taped up phones if I can borrow a digicam.

I put on the tape in many overlapping layers about 1/4 inch thick. I used black plastic electrical tape, it is stretchy so it conforms to the curved surface and can be pulled tight. If you do a careful job it doesn't ugly up the phones much.

In my case the tape slowly expanded afer it was on the headphones for a couple of weeks and it "flowed" down past the ends of the band about 1/2 inch and I trimmed it off with a razor or knife, being careful not to damage the headband plastic. I usually store the headphones hanging on a hook in the normal direction so gravity probably caused the tape to "flow" downwards.

I put on the tape right after I got the phones back from Sennheiser for the final warranty repair so they were in perfect condition then (almost a year ago) and they seem to be still perfect. I haven't heard any cracking or flexing noises at all, so the tightly wrapped tape seems to be doing the job. I would always hear those before and they tell you the headphone bands are cracking, flexing, and the pieces are not properly fitting, so if you hear noises expect to see cracks soon.

If you put on the tape after seeing some cracking that will not be as good but it will still help. Possibly you might want to get the phones in perfect condition maybe after warranty repair before taping them up.

To minimize cracking problems, don't extend the cups out of the band any more than necessary, and when not in use store the phones so there is no stress on the band, by folding one of the cups inwards.

I think the HD215 model is probably the same as the HD280 except more sturdy, but I'm not certain. If they bust again I'll just get something different like the HD215 (or Sony 7506 which a lot of people like).

BTW if anyone can find the posts or thread where someone told how to do the mod for extra BASS, please post the link.

Re Skip: how long did the warranty repair take?

It took about 3 weeks, there is a Sennheiser subsidiary in my country (Canada) but it's 3,000 miles away and shipping time was probably near half of that (I just used mail for shipping). You could speed things up for extra cost with airmail or Fedex/etc, depending on your location.
