Just came back from Hong Kong, where I bought the technics 1210s
The ear pads are really small, and they suck if you wear glasses. I guess I'll have to put contacts on everytime I want to mix. Since my cd players are at school, I've only used them to listen to music and stuff.
They're my first pair of "more expensive" headphones, given that I've never spent over $40 on headphones before, I hope theyre good =/ I have nothing to compare them to either, they sound great =P |

Hey,
I know I saw posts saying MDR-V6 = MDR-7506....and both are good....
but there is a $20 difference between the two. It can't be for no reason at all. I recall hearing its because the plug on the 7506 is gold plated and the one on the V6 isn't....is that true? and if so, will it make much of a difference?! |

Gold always gives better sound, but it will also depend on the other stuff too.

Yeah, I've heard that the gold adapter lasts longer also. |

| sup guys, i was wondering if you guys could recommend some headphones that would only be used around a computer (listening to mp3's). My budget is around 50 US dollars, but i can go a little higher if it's needed. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks. |

Lessee here... :)
I'm back for a bit, lol...
Anyway, gold plating merely gives a more reliable connection... so if you rotate the headphone plug in it's jack, it is less likely to make popping noises... but the only real benefit is when BOTH the jack and the plug are gold plated... Also, the 7506 comes with a parts sheet. That's basically the only difference; there is no difference in sound whatsoever.
If you are looking for phones to use with your computer, why not answer these questions?
*Do you rip your own mp3's?
*If so, at what bitrate?
*Will you use them for anything else other than mp3 listening?
*If so, what?
*Do you need to be isolated from outside noises?
*What is your sound card?
*What is the maximum you are willing to pay, after shipping, for headphones online? |

I just got the Sennheiser HD 280's. Can't really compare them to other phones but they're definitely good quality. Are they the best for DJ work? I don't know, but they're good for my purposes, which include a number of uses.
I got them online from etronics.com, one of those New York City electronics dealers. No problems at all with order and delivery. US$75 + $8 UPS ground shipping. Newegg.com is $85 and free shipping. I'm in Canada so I had them sent to a shipping office in USA and then I drove across the border to pick them up 8 days after ordering. The Senns are made in Ireland so no duty fees. They ended up 1/2 price compared to local dealers who would need to do a special order.
The bass seemed weak when I first tried them so I did the "burn in" which is not actually mentioned in the manual. I put on 5 electronica CDs, set to repeat play, 40% volume from the CD headphone jack. 10 hours later there seemed to be more bass and smoother sound, but it could be placebo effect, or my imagination.
The HD 280 manual says the frequency response is 8 Hz to 25 kHz within 10 db of the 1 kHz level. BUT the frequency response graph in the manual only goes from 90 Hz to 14 kHz, so we don't know what the response looks like at the ends, presumably it is down 10 db. Personally I can only hear to about 15 kHz and the HD 280's sound excellent to me, although there's not as much bass as the specs would indicate.
My speakers are middle-range Paradigm Phantoms, they go down to 40 Hz and they sound more bassy than these headphones. You can hear bass in the 280's but it does not have the same quality as the speakers. Maybe this is related to your not sensing the bass in the same way as with speakers. Speakers let you feel the bass through your body and also there are room echoes, and you don't get that with headphones, plus your ears are covered up, so it's not the same type of sound. The 280's might be healthier for your ears than other phones like the Sony MDR-V700DJ that artificially raise the bass.
Overall theses headphones sound better than my speakers. As others have pointed out, you can hear details and qualities of the music with good headphones that you cannot hear with most speakers. But I dont think ANY headphones are going to sound like high-end speakers. I look forward to using the Sennheisers for general music listening with my sound system and computer, making compilation mixes, and maybe a little DJ stuff if I can work up the nerve.
A few points:
Construction quality: good materials, all black higher grade plastic.
3 m coiled cord.
1/8" stereo plug and screw-on 1/4" adapter, both gold plated.
Some replaceable parts (cord and padding).
Comfort level: good, circumnaural design with padding, easy to wear for several hours.
Easy to adjust position for single or both ear listening.
Volume level: plenty. As others have said, you probably don't need to use really high headphone levels because the external sound is reduced 32 db by the circumnaural design.
I cranked up the speakers in my home simulated "club" and the headphones reduced the external sound adequately when I was setting up the mix.
Appearance: bigger and not as cool looking as the Sonys.
The headband is spaced about 3 cm away from your head on the sides. |

Well... why not go for Sennheiser or Beyerdynamic or AKG if you are in Europe? Local companies should have the best value there... |

Ya. they dont isolate at all and are cheapo headphones. Not recommended for DJ use, but they sound alright for the $$$. |
