Leopold: The white light is the nuke going off. The bright light with Locke at the end of season 1 was just Desmond turning on the light in the hatch to use the mirrors/telescope to view what was happening. However, that light was much more than that to Locke and started a series of events.

Basically this is how I see the show at the moment:
Jacob is the good guy. He advocates free will above all else. However he influences people to make the right decisions by impacting their lives in some way.
Fake Locke/other guy on beach with Jacob that wants to kill him/Smokey is the bad guy. He advocates that fate and selfishness will win over free will.
These two have been at "war" from the beginning of time and the island is their battleground. There is a very garden of Eden feel to what I just saw. "God" can only impact other people to choose the right path. "Satan" takes the form of a smoke monster and people that are dead to influence people to choose the path that contradicts God's path. "Satan" thinks he has won by using Ben to kill "God" but "God" has influenced the '77 Losties to use the bomb to create an alternate reality of sorts where the playing field is still on equal footing.

That is basically my interpretation of what is going on. I know a lot of people might be upset with this type of plot development and that it'll get to close to deus ex machina that happened in Battlestar Galactica but I think it's a very interesting idea.

this is a great theory!

i don't think i buy the bomb making an alternate reality, even though it was hinted by jacob trying to influence young kate & sawyer not to steal or write the letter ... i'm with miles in saying "what if the h-bomb IS 'the incident'"? the photo that sun found (along with dan and his book, and ben doing research ahead of time on the losties, etc) showed that the losties being in the 70s shaped the 2000s we know from the show. i don't think it fits in at all to think that there was a version of jack that did not want to blow up the h-bomb

but then there is the talk of desmond being 'the exception', maybe in every loop he adds his own ripples to the butterfly effect.. but still would be very awkward for them to show exactly what changed from the original timeline.

so jacob's purpose for locke the whole time was just to help him make the plane crash? he seems like a dick to me for making him think he's a leader etc. just to end up being a prop. i guess it was all an effort to get 'the incident' to happen, i'm assuming jack & friends will warp to 2007 at the whiteout and somehow help jacob even though he got shanked and burned alive.

they never do a good job of expressing thoughts and feelings the "superior" characters, ie. elouise, jacob, richard, widmore, etc... always a big ing mystery what they know or intend. did jacob know what was up with re-crashed locke? why the hell did he dub him a leader if his rival was just going to abuse that to get richard to bring him. . is he not omniscient or what?

2010, that's a long in' time...

All I can say is that I cannot recall a time when my mind was ed so violently as with last night's episode.

I think the beginning of the season finale was just mindblowing. with Jacob, the statue of Horace, and the pirate ship.

Oh, and I'm predicting Sayid isn't dead. It's not based on anything concrete other than it seems too similar to Jin's status at the end of S4 and I don't think they'll open up a new season by killing off someone. :p

same goes for Juliet. Yeah she was the one who sacrificed her body to activate the bomb, but I think the island has some plans for her.

I hope so, I've been so damn attracted to her all throughout this season.

Didn't anyone just love being taken by the hand and being led to believe the battle for the island was between Widmore, Eloise, and Ben only to reveal that they are nothing more than pawns as everyone else? Sure, much more knowledgeable pawns than the Losties, but pawns nonetheless.

is it just me, or when Juliet does not have dirt on her face or sweating profusely, she looks eeriely like an older version of Slylee? just saying...... :wtf:

* awaits for Slylee to do her usual search for her name, and find this thread *

I think Jacob and the other guy cycle through time again and again.
The other guy says he wants to kill Jacob and Jacob recruits people (through his actions) from off the island to stop this from happening in one way or another. Like Desmond says, people are the variable in the equation (this also references the Valenzetti Equation).
woscar
It was actually Daniel who said that. But speaking of Desmond, the last scene with the bomb detonating and the bright light was very reminiscent of when Desmond turned the fail-safe key at the end of Season 2. Hopefully, Juliet will now wake up naked in the jungle.
