I agree that it was a red herring, timing wise, showing the purgatory world right after the bomb blew up. Personally I think that right after Jack died on the island (during the finale), he woke up on the plane at the beginning of this season, when Rose tells him that he can let go now. But that's just my interpretation of it. The thing is, is that no matter when people died in the real world, they all ended up in the other world at the same time.

It's funny, you mentioning the Pirates Of The Caribbean as a metaphor to try to help explain it. I think that they did that in the show, with the candy bar. Juliet saying that all you need to do is unplug the machine (desmond unplugging the island) and the candy will fall down (MIB loses his special powers, becomes human again), then plug it back in again (jack replugging the island), and everything is okay.

Yeah, that's because they all end up in the sideways world at the same time, regardless of when they died in real life.

No, the Nuke just stopped them from time traveling and got them back to their own time. It never destroyed the island. It was supposed to destroy the island so no plane crash, but it didn't work properly. Because they had already blown up the nuke when the plane crashed (since that is how time travel works, as you should know). They weren't going back and changing the past by setting it off, they were simply making the past.

Jack already had some cuts on his face before that. Even before the fight began he had some cuts from the fight in the sideways world. It was just supposed to be showing that the fight happened, not that they were happening at the same time.

I'm not sure why you think that time is automatically simultaneous. When has this show ever been linear when it comes to time? The whole point of Ben and Hurley's little exchange when he says "you were a good #1" and "you were a great #2" is there to show us that it was NOT at the same time. It was many, many years later. Kate telling Jack that she missed him was because they hadn't seen each other in years (since she jumped off the cliff and he went off to save the world).

It was a confusing show, but it wasn't THAT confusing. The Final was actually pretty damn well done and people nit picking about little facts are missing the point of the speech at the end. None of that stuff really matters. All that matters is the people who have found each other and found redemption. Ben isn't ready to move on with them (even though they invite him) because he can't forgive himself for everything he has done yet.

Fantastic finale to a fantastic show.

This :D

the finale -- like the entire season -- was cat featuring the type of lazy storytelling they teach you to avoid in creative writing 101. 5 seasons of mysteries meant squat after they turned it into a sappy oxygen network movie of the week.

In some religions, such as Buddhism, the moment before a person dies he/she sees everything that happens in his life up to that point. LOST is told from Jack's point of view as he relives the greatest parts of his life. Also the writers through the use of the other great characters shows how they are all related. To Jack, through the actions of all these characters and players, the consequences of their collective action seemed like fate and destiny. That he was meant to die on the Island after killing MIB. All the mysteries were not only a storytelling tool but ultimately irrelevant to the life of Jack and larger picture.

The underlining message of "letting go", consistent with Buddhism, is for Jack to grasp at the end and also for the audience. Sawyer let go of Juliet. Sayid let go of allowing others define who he is.

Also consistent with Tibetan Buddhism is the believe in various stages of rebirth. The sideways "timeline" is the stage after living and before rebirth. Hurley and Ben, the new caretakers, must have lived decades, if not centuries, after Jack died.

One remaining question is, if the sideways took place after everyone is dead, why did Jack's neck bleed inexplicably?

I interpreted it as a glimpse of Jack's life manifesting itself. Also, another way of adding mystery to the show. Remember that his neck first started to bleed on the first episode of the season while he was on the plane.

I faintly remember this. If so, this proves that the season wasn't just thrown together episode by episode, and that they took care in writing it purposefully. There was a purpose to everything that you saw, and everything that was said.

STILL LOST and Confused? Here is a Quick Explanation of The End

I know several fans across the world have many many questions about the LOST Series finale but one big confusing thing for many is how did they all die or "when"?

The simple answer is rewatch what Christian Shepard told Jack. He said they all died at DIFFERENT times and the ALT Purgatory world (Season 6 off island) takes place in NO time. So no matter at what point they died, some on the island, some off after leaving, they all make it to the ALT Purgatory world and then to the church to "let go" and move on.

In the final confrontation. Desmond was the only person who could go down into the light and unplug the cork. By unplugging the cork. The island lost all power. When the island lost all power ALL THE RULES COULD NOW BE BROKEN. Smokey/MIB lost all of his powers which made him mortal again but at the same time he could now kill the candidates directly. At the same time the island without its power was being destroyed…probably the whole world was being destroyed like “Mother” told her kids on what would happen if the light went out.

So MIB was now mortal and after a confrontation with Jack, he was finally killed. But the island needed to be re-plugged. Jack did this and sacrificed himself for the island. Hurley was left to be the new Jacob and Ben was his new “Richard” It appears that they had a successful long future not unseen but as Hurley told Ben in the ALT (which I am going to get into) “you were a good number 2” Ben: you were a good number 1” As for the people on the plane it appears that they escaped the island and probably lived happy lives back in the main land. The ones probably back in the island lived happy lives, like Rose Bernard, Cindy and the kids. As for Desmond he probably was able to get back to his family as well thanks to Hurley and Ben. Jack’s dying body was thrown out of the cave (like MIB’s body In Across the sea). He laid there dying looking up when Vincent came over and as he looked up and saw that the Ajira plane had been able to leave. He closed his eye and died.

Eventually like everyone does, they all died, from old age or however. (including Richard who started to finally age). Hurley probably died long after everyone else once he found his own candidate. When they finally died their “spirits” joined the others who had died before during the course of the series, they were in this type of “purgatory” which in season 6 was the ALT reality. Once in this purgatory, once they “woke up” or realized that they were in reality dead. They were able to “cross-over” probably to a type of heaven depending on your spiritual views. They lived happily ever after, in the great beyond.

People might not like this purgatory ending but we have to realize that everything that happened season 1 - 6 on the island was VERY REAL. Everything happened. The only thing that was purgatory was the ALT reality, and I strongly believe this was a joke of sorts from the writers. People from all the way back in season 1 kept theorizing that it was Purgatory all along, well the writers played an ironic story on us, we wanted a purgatory storyline, they created it…..it was the flash sideways. Honestly this was the perfect ending cause we will be able to theorize for decades to come but more importantly our characters got closure and that’s what LOST was truly about it was about the characters finally finding redemption and in the end, even if it was in the ALT/purgatory world…they finally found it. ...Except for poor Micheal who is stuck for all eternity on the island as a whisper, for the sins he committed. But at least for the most part all the characters got a happy ending
