And the candidates, why so many of them? and what happens where there is one left? will they get the same powers as the guy before?

The answer to that is much more mundane. The producers did it to keep one of their best assets in the show: Terry O'Quinn.

So the alternate timeline is going the Matrix way - first glitches showing up...Season 6, contrary to everyone's expectation (or hopes) has done the impossible: making an already mind boggling show even more complicated, up to the point that the viewers will just beg to have SOME sort of a satisfying, half-sensible and understandable ending. That way they successfully made everyone forget their 1001 little questions, from the first Polar Bear to some time-travelling inconsistencies. Smart fellas, those producers.

Polar bears were brought to the Island by the DHARMA Initiative, who held them in cages at the Hydra station. (The World of the Others) Text on the blast door map suggests that DHARMA Initiative researchers were attempting to genetically modify the polar bears to allow them to survive warmer climates. At least some of the polar bears survived the Purge, after which they were freed from their cages and swam to the main Island. (Access Granted) After the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 in 2004, survivors of the crash occasionally encountered and were threatened by the bears, and Charlotte Lewis discovered the skeleton of a DHARMA Initiative polar bear in Tunisia that same year.

Came across this interesting theory...

quote:
Why does Desmond want the manifest and what does he plan to show the others??

I read a theory on this site and it made some comparisons to Desmond waking up on the island after touching penny’s hand in slu to Jack’s waking up in the pilot episode (and after the Ajira crash, i think). There was certainly some similarities there and it got me thinking, what if Jack’s body had been placed in the jungle, and him waking up was actually a result of him jumping between the timelines..? And then i thought that it could explain why he and the others survived the crash - they were never on the plane!

I think this could be what Desmond has figured out and what he wants the manifest for. He is going to show the others that they are not on the manifest and were never on the plane…

most of those questions have been answered in some subtle and not-so subtle ways. that, and it's the viewers own damn faults for blowing these certain mysteries out of proportion as if they have some real weight to the storyline.

Most aren't going to be satisfied by whatever the ending is because the producers did a lot of going in a direction then changing their minds and choosing another direction. After the fact they later try to clean things up to explain the inconsistency but it just doesn't feel right. Many things that they lead us to believe were important like the Others, Dharma, and the Stations had no real relevance to the ultimate out come.

I also remember the producers said that everything could be explained by science and wasn't about the supernatural which the way things have progressed doesn't look to be true. Angel vs Devil solution leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Its quickly devolving into overly religious and sentimental ending where we are expected to forget about all the inconsistencies along the way.
