Totally agree could have slotted that in at pretty much any point with a few edits no real story progression.
To be honest I wouldn't care if they lived or died, got washed out to sea, dug up and eaten or had sex under the sand and a new baby popped up outta the ground. Don't know them don't care (kinda like Ensign Deadmeat in Star Trek: New guy appears you know he's dying that episode!!!).
