Man Arrested for Having Uzi

NEW YORK (AP) - An ex-Israeli army soldier living in Queens has been arrested for plotting to buy a half-dozen hand grenades. Police searching his Rego Park apartment found an Uzi submachine gun and ammunition.

Police say 57-year-old Joshua Hedvat reportedly made threats to a judge, a rabbi and U-S Senator Charles Schumer. However, Schumer's office says they knew of no threats.

Authorities and neighbors say Hedvat complained that his family fortune in Iran was cheated from him.

Neighbors told police Hedvat was a loner who often muttered about violence, but he never did anything dangerous.

Man Busted, Charged with trying to Buy Illegal Weapons
(Rego Park-WABC, May 9, 2005) — A man from Queens is under arrest for allegedly wanting to buy six hand grenades. He's accused of trying to make a deal with a person who turned out to be an undercover cop.

It happened in Rego Park. Eyewitness News' Nina Pineda reports.

People who live across the hall, right next to 57-year-old Joshua Hedvat say they were sick when they found out he had an Uzi inside of the apartment and was reportedly trying to build some sort of mini- arsenal. They tell us this was the crazy neighbor, the one who ranted and raved about the U.S. government, conspiracy theories, and talked about blowing things up. They didn't take him seriously.

Police nabbed the 56-year-old man allegedly trying to buy the explosives near his Rego Park home. They say their investigation revealed the suspect had a business deal go bad on him. Police say he is an American citizen of Armenian-Jewish decent who reportedly tried to solicit help by writing letters to area rabbis. When he didn't get the response he wanted, they say he wrote to a judge and Senator Charles Schumer.

Neighbors said he seemed angry and unstable. Police say he was a disturbed person who already had an arsenal: a machine gun in the apartment along with illegal assault weapon 149 rounds of ammunition.

Police are charging him with possession of illegal weapons, and attempting to possess illegal weaponry.

THat's a little better... now from these two articles, we can get a rough idea of what's likely to be true, adn what's likely to be sketchy ;-D... though if you wanna be sure, u'd want a bare minimum of 3 articles, about 5 would be the best number...

though i don't get the tin-hats bit...

and...

GOD BLESS AMERICA.... ha ha ha

Though I liked Queens, when i was there.... just the excessive patriotism that pisses me off, there's US flags everywhere....

As far as patriotism goes, there seems to be a large amount of WWII and Korean veterans in Queens. There are also more VFW's (Veterans of Foreign Wars) posts in that borough than any other from what I can remember. I can account for four off the top of my head, whereas there are two in the Bronx that I know of. I know of none in Manhattan.

The article, as interesting as it is, has not garnered CNN status. Hence you will only see local reports.

Accused grenade buyer: I was set up

BY DEBORAH S. MORRIS

A Queens man accused of trying to buy hand grenades said Tuesday that he was framed by a man who stayed with him for a couple of days.

But police say Joshua Hedvat, 57, of Rego Park was unhappy because he believed he had once been swindled in a stock scam, and wrote letters to and called officials -- including Sen. Chuck Schumer -- urging them to intercede on his behalf.

When that failed, Hedvat became upset and made plans with a police informant to buy six hand grenades, police said.

In Queens Criminal Court Tuesday, defense attorney Samantha Seda told Judge Lenora Jerald that her client was duped by the friend. The friend asked Hedvat to look inside several bags in the trunk of a parked car. The bags contained the explosives, Seda said.

"My client states, your honor, that this is a set up and that he is not the person in possession of the alleged weapons," she said.

On Monday, according to Seda, Hedvat's friend came to Hedvat's house at 65-36 99th St. and said he wanted to show Hedvat something. The two walked to the car parked a couple of blocks away, and as Hedvat looked into the trunk, the police arrived.

"He didn't know what was in the bags," she said of Hedvat.

Police obtained a search warrant for Hedvat's home and arrested him after they found an assault weapon, either a Mac 10 or Mac 11, and 149 rounds of .45-caliber ammunition.

Hedvat, a dual citizen of Israel and Iran who has lived in the United States for 35 years, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and attempted criminal possession of a weapon. He was remanded and ordered back to court May 24.

Tuesday the Rego Park neighborhood where Hedvat has lived for the past 10 years was abuzz with news of his arrest. "It's surprising. Especially someone you say hello to everyday," said Daniel Maman, manager of Estate Decor, an antiques store near Hedvat's home. "He was never aggressive or did anything weird or strange, he just complained a lot."

At ACA car service, staffers said Hedvat often came in, spending the day drinking tea and kibitzing with others.

"He complained, but nothing big. He's a nice guy," said one of the dispatchers.

A spokeswoman for Schumer's office said there is no complaint on record with the Police Department.

Man's effort to buy grenades blown up
By Zach Patberg

A Rego Park Iranian was arraigned Tuesday on charges that he attempted to purchase six grenades during a sting operation set up by police, who later found a machine gun in his apartment, law enforcement officials said.
Following a long-term investigation, Joshua Hedvat, 57, was arrested Monday around 2 p.m. after allegedly trying to buy the inert grenades from a police informant in Forest Hills, authorities said.

That same day detectives executed a search warrant of Hedvat's apartment at 65-36 99th St. and found either a MAC-10 or MAC-11 machine gun with the serial numbers scratched off, three empty magazines and 149 .45-caliber bullets stuffed in a bag inside a closet, according to the criminal complaint filed by the Queens district attorney's office.

Hedvat was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and attempted possession of a weapon and faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. At the arraignment, Queen Criminal Court Judge Lenora Gerald ordered Hedvat held without bail, deeming the defendant -- a legal resident of the United States with dual citizenship in Israel and Iran -- a flight risk, the DA said.

He was due back in court May 24.

Hedvat's motivation for acquiring the grenades is unclear, but police suggested it could have stemmed from his feeling cheated after losing a decade-long legal battle in 1980s, in which Hedvat claimed to have been swindled out of a large amount of stocks. The DA said investigators found during their search a bank book in which Hedvat had written that he had a $67,000 mutual fund. It is uncertain whether that money does or ever did exist.

It was also believed that Hedvat was particularly angry at U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), though police could not confirm whether any threats were ever made, police said.

"With the gun he had, if he had gotten a hold of real grenades he could've been a real problem," said Inspector John Philbin, of the 112th Precinct, where Hedvat was brought for questioning. "My guess is he didn't want them as collector items."

He's already had a pop in the "1 book > 3,000 human lives" thread!

But I just dont think I have the energy to address the very general opinions he just made in this thread!

Worth a try ;)

Give me examples and tell me why they should be considered viable offers of peace...

(Baring in mind citing Oslo and Camp David wont get your argument very far :p )
