Concert unites Arabs and Israelis

Israeli and Arab musicians have played together at a memorial concert in the West Bank by famed Argentine-Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim.

Sunday's concert was held in memory of the late Edward Said, who co-founded the West-Eastern Divan Workshop and Orchestra with Barenboim in 1999.

The one hundred musicians included Palestinians, Israelis and Syrians, all playing in Ramallah for the first time.

They received a standing ovation from the 700-strong audience.

On Saturday, Barenboim said his orchestra had come to Ramallah to convey a message of solidarity and mutual understanding.

"There are two peoples who have a very deep attachment to this part of the world," he told reporters.

'Normal people'

"Either we all kill each other or we learn to live with the fact that we have to share this land in equality and dignity."

His sentiments were echoed by the young members of his ensemble.

"It's important for the people of our area to know each other," said Tal Reval Theodorou, a 23-year-old Israeli violinist.

"When I got to know the Israelis, I found they were normal people," said 21-year-old Nadeem Hassan, one of 10 Syrians in the orchestra.

"Some of them are creative in their work and I learned a lot from them."

A similar concert scheduled in 2003 was cancelled at the last minute over security concerns.

This is true. So true, but also one has to be carefull on where to get his news.

Ha ha ha ha calling crying Jewish Teenagers who are getting evicted from thier life long homes Zionist WHORES, ha ha ha ha that sounds pretty racist to me.

Zionism is a racist ideology. The only way to have a Jewish majority is by forcibly displacing the natives (Palestinians) from their own lands, considering Palestinians have a much higher birthrate than Israelis, and majority of Israeli's are immigrants and are not native to region. Do some research on Zionism. That is why Cyrus uses the term Zionism in that way.

Did I miss something??

Yup. Read above.

No, Cyrus is not from Palestine.

Note: I'm not condoning insensitivity, but that's completley subjective. There are several pro-Israelis who post here and use pretty derogatory and dehumanising language to describe/reffer to Palestinians, and on many occasions, Arabs in general.

£180,000 the settlers are being compensated with! Thats around $340,000!!!

How can you feel sorry for them?! That will buy you a lovely appartment/home in New York where no doubt they all came from in the first place!

And now Sharon is saying the settlements in the West Bank are gonna be increased and Ariel, right in the heart of the West Bank is gonna be annexed to Israel!

But when the Palestinians continue attacking Israel, people are gonna say "see, even after we gave them their land back (Gaza) they still dont want peace!"

The dictionary definition does not include the practical implementation of it.

And nice try in trying to get a rise out of me: "propaganda bull of yours"

After the great "Dictionary Definition Wars" dictionary definitions have been banned

Besides, if you can't work out why a state that is exclusively only for one race/religion is racist then I don't really think you need to take this any further...
George Smiley
Actually, saying that, I'll post a dictionary definition up...

quote:
zionism

n 1: a policy for establishing and developing a national homeland for Jews in Palestine [syn: Zionism] 2: a movement of world Jewry that arose late in the 19th century with the aim of creating a Jewish state in Palestine

...as it does suggest Zionism is racist!

20% of today's population in israel is not Jewish. They are not persecuted or discriminated against. In fact they enjoy many priviliges, for example easier access to acadmies etc.

Hows Zionism any different to other Naitonalist movements? How is the movement towards the creation of a state for your people RACIST per definitionem?

Cos nationalism means nationality, not race

When nationalism only looks out for one race (or religion or whatever) then that is racist...

What are you talking about? Austria also has a restrictive immigration policy, doest it make it a racist country?

Wanna start the monumental yet totally irrelvant debate of the definition of "jews"? (religion, peoople, race) ?
The German nationalist movement or the Arab one seeked for a German/Arab nation, just as Zionism was about a state for (yet not exclusively) Jews. You might wanna read the Declaration of Independence of 1948.

No, and neither does Israel (Jews only).

Austria won't let anyone without a special reaosn in, either, though. Asylum-seekers, EU-citizens, people with a special residence/work permit.

You think the chefs in Tel Aviv's Thai restaurants are Ashkenazic Jews? :wtf:
