Palestinian, I'd like your input and perspective on this.

Palestinian groups maintain truce

Hamas received the Palestinian leader in its Gaza heartland
Palestinian militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad say they will maintain an undeclared truce while they consider joining a ceasefire with Israel.
Senior Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahar said the group would make a final decision after reflecting on Saturday's talks with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.

Islamic Jihad confirmed it would also respect the undeclared peace.

Mr Abbas went to Gaza hoping to sell the full ceasefire that he agreed with Israel on Tuesday to the groups.

Mr Zahar said that in certain circumstances, Hamas would consult Mr Abbas's administration on what he called "the mechanism for the retaliation".

Any suggestion that Hamas might consult with the Palestinian Authority on any aspect of its military activity would be something entirely new, the BBC's Alan Johnston reports from Gaza City.

This would be taken as an indication that Mr Abbas had made some important progress in these talks, he adds.

The Palestinian leader was thought to have argued that the agreement with Israel does meet most of the groups' demands regarding a cessation of Israeli military activity.

In another development, Israel agreed to hand control of the West Bank town of Jericho to the Palestinian Authority as early as mid-week.

Negotiation fears

The talks came hours after Israel agreed to allow the return of up to 60 Palestinians expelled from the West Bank in 2002.

A Hamas attack on Thursday briefly put the truce under question

The men, accused by Israel of terrorist involvement, include 40 Palestinians who took part in a month-long siege in Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity.

But Hamas is concerned that the release will not be nearly as sweeping as it wants and the group could be hard to convince, our correspondent says.

The militant organisation is also said to be worried that Mr Abbas might allow the process of talks with Israel to become bogged down in protracted negotiations that produce little for the Palestinians.

Mr Zahar said the group was waiting to see how Israel would act and wanted to be sure that Israel had stopped military operations and "targeted assassinations", and had made clear its criteria for freeing Palestinian prisoners

'Heavy pressure'

Tension grew on Friday after Hamas fired rockets and mortars at Jewish settlements, claiming retaliation for the death of a Palestinian man who was killed by army fire the day before.

However, Mr Abbas sacked some of his top security officials for failing to halt the attacks, Israel did not make any military response and the truce appeared to be still holding otherwise.

Islamic Jihad leader Mohammed al-Hindi warned on Saturday that the groups were under "heavy pressure" to resume hostilities.

"Israel has continued provocations against the Palestinian people and no one is blaming it," he told Arabic TV channel al-Jazeera.

Mr Hindi called for a "programme that would help us avoid these pressures".

I feel that Abbas has made it clear that he's serious about the truce. I say give him the chance to do what he can. However, I don't blame the other factions for being skeptical about the truce. Six Palestinians have been killed since the truce was declared in Sharm Al Sheikh. A boy was killed today by a in settler and Israel declared that a new settlement would be built in northern Hebron. And the wall is still being built over Palestinian land. Although Abbas is trying to work something out here, Hamas isn't going to sit on its ass and take the beatings for long. Provocation has always been Israel's most effective weapon (along with the PR machine). Now I do think Hamas should restrain itself, but if Israel persists in violating this truce then I don't see why the Palestinians should keep taking it up the ass.

Well, I started reading the IDF thread, done about 10 pages. But since I don't know too much about the whole history of the conflict except for what I've seen in the news for the past few years, I have a few questions.

1) There seems to be a lot of hatred thrown by both sides. Now what I want made clear is....Do the Pro-Palestinian supporters hate the whole fact that Israel exists? Or just the fact that the IDF kills? Are you guys anti-semetic? Because from what you guys say sometimes it really starts to look like it.

2) Cyrus King, could you please give me a background of yourself? Nationality, upbringing, which country you were raised? What made you such a politically charged person?

You guys will argue, and argue, and argue, but none of this arguing has seemed to produce a common ground or solution to this major issue. Both Israel and Palestine have committed wrongs against each other and there's no defending either one. Killing people from helicopters is wrong, just as suicide bombings are wrong. Hopefully BOTH SIDES SEE THIS. Instead of blasting each other, why not try to work together on a solution? If enough people did this, the violence and war and killing would stop. It really bewilders me why there's so much finger pointing instead of compromise and solution finding. Both Cyrus King and dj_ilan_yosef have presented good points, and valid ones from whichever side you look at it. But really, fighting over who's right rather than working together at achieving peace is fruitless. Many people forget that the majority of people in that whole Middle Eastern area want peace, and because of the idiots in authority, get a bad name. Why hate on Jews? Or Palestinians? Hatred leads nowhere. Killing achieves nothing. For those who encourage or agree with killing of either side, you people are just as bad as the people doing the killings, and no wonder no one will ever take you seriously. You guys make yourselves look like fools, and like the enemy.

You know what the Palestinians have a point...look at Poles right now...there are jews in the USA which grandparents had land prior to the war and it got confiscated etc...oh wee poor jews, why did they leave if the land was important to them. now they are trying to get this land back...thank god the polish government put into law that you have to be a polish citizen and live minimum 20 years in poland...the fact of the matter is ...the JEWISH Port authority and airport authority in NYC threathened to suspend flights from poland if poland changed its laws...no we didn;t cave in, business is business for them, 40 flights a week to NYC from warsaw is big business...funny how many cultures countries portray them this way, but that only makes them own more banks, wto, wta, etc etc etc

I see you just took the opportunity to make yourself sound like a moron first. I guess not everyone can fully develop mentally by your age.

Georegy is British - forgive him.
He has hooligan in him, he always is aiming to pick a fight.

What can you do, not everbody is born God's chosen people ;)

btw Chris, if you don't know much of this history - be careful. A lot of what you hear (especially from anyone politically charged (that means everyone on this forum that posts more than once a year)) will be some form of revionist made up history whereby the omit facts or try and portray it to look in favor of one party or the other. Even much of the academic history on the middle east is highly politically motivated, but this does not mean the centerist view is right.

The best is to look at too opposing historical overviews, think logically and with scrutiny, and see what makes the most sense to you.
