Ten-year-old Nuran Deeb was hit in the head inside a United Nations-run school in Rafah, UN officials said.

Witnesses blamed Israeli troops, but Israel said an initial investigation suggested they were not responsible.

Despite the tensions, talks between the two sides on an Israeli pullback from West Bank towns went ahead as planned.

Palestinian officials said Nuran was struck in the head as she was walking inside the school in the Brazil neighbourhood of the Rafah refugee camp.

We heard talk about a ceasefire. But it seems there is nothing like that on the ground

Nuran Deeb's mother

"She suddenly screamed and fell to the ground, bleeding. The girls started to run everywhere," one witness said.

Another girl was wounded in the hand.

The Israeli military said an investigation into the shooting found its troops had not opened fire in that area.

A military official, who wished to remain anonymous, said Palestinians nearby had been shooting into the air to celebrate their return from the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

Palestinian residents said no such celebrations had taken place.

Ceasefire warning

The Palestinian militant group Hamas fired six mortar shells in retaliation for the incident, damaging a house in an Israeli settlement.

It said the future of its informal ceasefire would depend on actions by the Israeli military.

The dead girl's mother told journalists: "We heard talk about a ceasefire. But it seems there is nothing like that on the ground.

"My daughter was lovely. Today she went to school earlier than usual. She said she wanted to play with her schoolmates before class."

The Palestinian police have recently deployed throughout Rafah
The death is the second such fatality in the area in two days. Israeli troops shot and killed a 65-year-old man who was walking near an army post on Sunday.

Last week Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas won a commitment from militant groups to stop anti-Israeli attacks and thousands of officers were deployed throughout Gaza, including the flashpoint town of Rafah.

Although no formal ceasefire has been agreed, Israel has also scaled back its military operations in return.

Israeli Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz and Palestinian negotiator Mohammed Dahlan met on Monday night to discuss the details of a security handover in the West Bank.

Palestinian officials say they are expecting to take control of Ramallah, Qalqiliya, Tulkarem and Jericho this week.

Israel captured the West Bank and the Gaza Strip - home to about four million Palestinians - during the 1967 Six Day war

For once, we agree completely. :( :( :(

Ever since the last Hamas attack at the Gaza border, Mahmoud Abbas has acheived both an informal cease-fire and has sent Palestinian police around Gaza's borders to prevent their own people from attacking Israel. I must say that takes guts from Abbas and determination. But my question is, why the is the IDF still killing Palestinians in Gaza since then? A couple of children have been killed including the ten year old girl yesterday. This is typical. It's nothing new. The same thing happened with every cease-fire, then when Hamas does a bombing, the Palestinians are blamed for breaking the cease-fire.

That report was WRONG.

Investigations found that the girls was hit by a shot from a PALESTINIAN gun!!!!

There is a wise old saying. "You can fool some of the people some of the time. You can't fool all of the people all of the time."

Abbas has made it clear that he shall continue the bloody hatred, incitement, terrorism and violence, for the purpose of perpetuating the political propaganda ploy of a fictitious Arab nation of "Palestine" and "Palestinian" people. The ultimate goal is annihilation of Israel and of the Jewish people.

Abbas is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Abbas, like Arafat, is no moderate. Don't be fooled by a better barber or stylish suit. Like his mentor of murder and mayhem, Arafat, he is only interested in terror and the international loot.

Abbas seeks an ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Jewish people in their homeland. Abbas wants to follow in the footsteps of Arafat, his partner in crime for forty-plus years in their terrorist organization and in the Palestinian Authority/Palestine Liberation Organization (PA/PLO).

Abbas rests on the laurel that he, like Arafat, is a moderate. With moderates like these, we certainly don't need extremist fanatical fundamentalists.

Abbas' track record on terrorism is quite clear and something the whole world best fear.

Abbas seeks to continue controlling the Fatah-led PA/PLO which he and Arafat created to steal land and money via murder and mayhem, laughing all the way to the bank.

Abbas' campaign promise is another Arab "Palestine" (according to the British Mandate, or Palestine Mandate, Arab "Palestine" was Transjordan, today the created fictional Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan) with the Holy City of Jerusalem as capital, along with the rest of the Holy Land.

Abbas' campaign continues Arafat's campaign of ethnic cleansing, genocide, hatred, incitement, mass murder and mayhem, terrorism and violence. His pledge and promise to follow in Arafat's footsteps should be taken quite seriously.

Abbas refuses to relinquish a so-called Arab "Palestinian" propaganda ploy of a "right of return". Implementing such a "right" would definitely mean the destruction by demographics of the Jewish nation-state, the only one amongst twenty-two Arab/Islamist corrupt dictatorships, human rights violators, ruthless repressive regimes, state supporters of terrorism and tyrannies in the very bad neighborhood known as the Middle East.

Abbas fails, however, to mention that most of the so called Arab "refugee" families came to the Palestine Mandate region out of economic necessity, poverty and starvation in their native Arab nations of Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. Most arrived in the 1920s, seeking better financial opportunity, dignity and human rights. Contrary to claims and misinformation, the vast majority of these Arabs, so-called "Palestinians", were not there for generations and generations, as they claim.

Abbas fails to mention that all of the Arab nations launching an aggressive attack against the newborn Israel told the Arab inhabitants of the land to leave, promising that after the Jews were "pushed into the sea", the Arabs could occupy the Jews' homes and land.

Abbas also fails to mention that the Jews have lived in the land since the time of the Bible, continuously, and are the real "Palestinians". They were also known as the Children of Israel, Hebrews, Israelites, Jews (from the tribe of Judah and the area of Judea). Despite the Diaspora, the Jews have a "right of return" to the "Holy Land" or "Promised Land", Israel or Zion.

Lastly, Abbas fails to mention the problem of Jewish "refugees" from Arab lands, and their "right of return". Jews in Arab lands were expelled from their homes and given sanctuary in the Jewish state of Israel. All that is acknowledged is that Jews came from Eastern Europe after the Holocaust. Yet, the Arabs never ever bothered to absorb their Arab brethren and cousins, even as Israel has absorbed Jewish refugees from throughout the entire world.

In addition, Abbas has vowed that he will not be satisfied until all murderer terrorists and other so-called "Palestinians" are released from jail, including convicted serial killer Marwan Barghouti, of the Fatah-controlled Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade and former candidate for the "Chairman of Terror" position. Barghouti gave his concession speech, at least temporarily, until his politically pressured release from prison.

Will this mass murderer go free? Time will tell. We'll see.

But make no mistake. Abbas, more affectionately known as Abu Mazen, is no moderate.

Abbas' resume includes being one of the co-founders of the Fatah-controlled PLO terrorist organization. Like his mentor Arafat, he is a mastermind of murder and mayhem, an architect of the Munich Olympics Massacre, the Oslo disaster, as well as the writer of a dissertation that the Holocaust was a hoax. A terrorist is a terrorist. Make no mistake.

13 rockets were shot in the last 2 days into israeli territories, wheres the cease fire ?! dont tell me that you expect israel to just wait till the palestinians run out of bullets.

Palestinian
First of all it was the I"D"F that claimed that it was palestinian gun fire that killed the girl because of nearby celebrations that Palestinians denied existed. Second, Palestinian residents said that the gunfire came from the Termit post, about 900m away. Even the location is pointed out by the residents. And there was no investigation. And it wouldn't be the first time Israeli Occupation Forces kill a child in Gaza. The rockets fired by Hamas and the DFLP were a response to the killing of the ten year old girl.

If Israel is truly a democracy, it would withdraw from the territories it occupied in 1967, abide by International Law, and stop subjugating 3.5 million people to its rule.

As to all your baseless claims regarding Abbas and Arafat, I'de just like to point out that Arafat had an even more moderate view than the majority of the Palestinian people. And Abbas more moderate than Arafat. When Arafat was alive, most people regarded Abbas as a traitor to the cause. Israel killed its chance for a two-state solution when it put Arafat under seige. Abbas is your second and last chance. I'm just going to sit back and watch Israel destroy itself by destroying the two-state solution.

As for past acts of violence by Fatah and the PLO, that's to be expected by any armed resistance group fighting to reclaim its land. Besides, it's not like Sharon has a clean slate.

Face it, boys. Without the two-state solution, your precious Israel will cease to exist.

I'm just going to sit back and watch Israel destroy itself This is the source of the problem.

People like you who long for the ditruction of Israel. Face it, this will NEVER happen.

In terms of this particular palestinina girl...there was an investigation, and it was proved that she was killed by PALESTINIAN fire.
I wont try to argue with the fact that others have been killed, because it is true. BUt the IDF has never intentionally targeted any of them. Which is more then I can say about Palestinians, who walk into crowded buses full of school children in detonate explosive belts full of metal bolts to maximize carange.

What you call an armed resistance is nothing but a group of terrorists who thrive on the blood if the inocent.

If Israel is truly a democracy, it would withdraw from the territories it occupied in 1967, abide by International Law, and stop subjugating 3.5 million people to its rule. Do you really think thast if Israel rtreated to the 1967 borders this would all be over??
Don't be so naive! Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Fatah have vowed many times on manyocasions to "drive all jews inot the ocean" and to "kill the infidels".

In anycase, there is no such thing as Palestine....they are just arabs...

I am surprised that as a canadien you support the murder of innocent people in homocide bombings...
these acts, no matter what the cause are not the answer!
